Should you wait for the next-generation 2019 Nissan Frontier? The 2018 Model could be your best buy now.

Waiting for a completely remodeled Nissan Frontier may not be the best bet for mid-size truck buyers. The Nissan Frontier is aging and needs a complete remodel, but buying a 2018 Frontier could be your smart option.

The current-generation Frontier pickup has been around for the last 13 years, and surprisingly, sales have increased this year thanks to America’s insatiable desire for trucks. Nissan USA reports sales are up 10.3 percent in the first 6 months of 2018.

It could be because Frontier is the most-affordable pickup in America with a base price of just $18,990 before destination. It’s the only new pickup truck available in the U.S. starting under $20,000. Why so much less than the completion from the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon?

Most of the overhead costs for R&D, including tooling, was fully paid for 13 years ago. Nissan’s cost to build this truck in Canton, Mississippi, is lower than the competition. Frontier also comes with proven engineering and reliability for over a decade. If you don’t mind the outdated styling, materials, and safety equipment, the Nissan Frontier is a good buy now.

It’s more than the price

Reliability is a big deal when buying a new vehicle and you want it to last. The Frontier has the highest Initial Quality Survey rating of any mid-size truck. The 2018 Nissan Frontier shines in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study and was the top-rated midsize pickup for the third consecutive year. Frontier beats the GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline who tied for second place.

Yes, the Nissan Frontier needs a complete remodel to stay competitive with the newly-revamped GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma. What it doesn’t need is a change in quality. It’s pricing and quality makes it a good buy now.

I bought a 2017 Frontier SV 4wd crew cab because of the cost and b/c the Frontier has good reliability numbers from several reviews. Yes I agree its completely outdated but its also a truck without lots of bells and whistles. My real only complaint is that I wish mine came with the rear view camera. I had a 2014 Altima beforehand that was very feature rich, I downgraded but on the other hand I have a truck I can haul stuff and 4wd.

Overall, Im pretty happy with it and I do plan to add a rear view camera soon too.
