Where is the land of the Subarus? There are four states where Subaru rules the road. You can probably guess which ones. More Subarus are sold in Washington, Colorado, Maine and Connecticut than any other states. Not just more Subarus, but they are the number one selling car in their borders. Why do they dominate sales in these states?
It’s not hard to figure out. Subaru is known for their all-weather capabilities and their recreation-purposed platform. Washington, Colorado, Maine and Connecticut are all cold-weather states and they also have mountains where their residents like to recreate on the weekends. Subaru is a perfect match for consumers who live there, and sales of the all-wheel-drive models is good evidence.
Subaru rules the road in Colorado
Just take a look at the state of Colorado where five of the top 10 selling cars are Subarus, with the Outback wagon and Forester SUV taking the top and second spots respectively. Outback and Forester are followed by the Legacy sedan (#5), Impreza compact (#6) and Crosstrek crossover at #10. These stats come from AAA Colorado's most recent list of the state's best-selling cars.
This is no surprise since the majority of Colorado’s population lives in or near the Rocky Mountains. All Subaru vehicles come standard with AWD except for the BRZ sports coupe. The Outback and Forester beat out the Toyota Highlander, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Honda Accord and Toyota 4Runner in sales in the high country of Colorado.
The numbers aren't skewed
Outback is the number one seller in Washington, Colorado and Maine, while the Forester dominates in Connecticut. These number aren’t skewed from any fleet sales either. Unlike most automakers (Toyota, Honda), Subaru sells virtually no vehicles to fleet or bulk buyers. All registration numbers come from private owners. It’s one reason why the resale value is so high on the multi-purpose AWD Subaru vehicles.
If you want to buy a used Outback wagon, Forester SUV or Crosstrek crossover in these states, good luck. There's more demand for Subaru than supply, especially in these popular SUV/wagon/crossover models. It’s almost smarter to buy new.
