When things finally get back to normal, and you start shopping for a new Subaru Forester or Crosstrek, you may not be able to find the exact model you want. It’s not because Subaru shut down production at both plants because of the COVID-19 health crisis. It’s because the Japanese automaker keeps inventory levels low to keep resale values high on its all-wheel-drive vehicles higher than all automakers.
Automotive News says Subaru has one of the lowest inventory levels of any automaker in the US.

The automotive site 24/7 Wall Street, compiled data from Kelly Blue Book from sales of all vehicles last year. They checked the average number of days a car sits in a dealership lot before being sold and came up with the top 25 hottest models that are out of stock. They found Subaru has five of the top models that spend less time sitting on dealer lots than all SUVs. The 2020 Subaru Forester is the hottest model followed by the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek.
The 2020 Subaru Forester is number 4 with an average of 21.2 days sitting on dealer lots before being sold. Forester ranks only behind the all-new Hyundai Palisade (18.7 days), Mercedes-Benz G-Class (16.5 days), and Kia Telluride (13.0 days). The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is number 7 with an average of 28.5 days on the lot. Customers will have the hardest time finding the exact trim level and color they want of these models.
The 2020 Subaru Ascent 3-Row family hauler is another all-wheel-drive model that’s moving off dealer lots quickly. Subaru Ascent is number 11 on the list sitting an average of 34.7 days in the showroom. Subaru Impreza is number 21 with average days on lot: 48.7, and the Subaru Outback comes in at number 22. Average days on the lot: 49.3.
The 2020 Subaru Forester is in demand now because it received a complete redesign for the 2019 model year. The Crosstrek was completely remodeled for the 2018 model year change. Both ride on the new Subaru Global Platform that improved ride quality and increased interior space. The Subaru Ascent was an all-new model for the Japanese automaker in 2019.
