Subaru is launching a new 2016 Impreza Sport Hybrid in Japan. Will other global markets get the new hybrid?
Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, has announced they will launch a new 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid in Japan later this summer. This is a Japan only model and other global markets won’t be getting the new Impreza hybrid. The new Impreza Sport Hybrid is the second hybrid from Subaru, following the Subaru XV Hybrid that launched in 2013.
Main features on Impreza hybrid system
Subaru’s new Impreza Sport hybrid will be powered by a 2.0-liter 4 cylinder boxer engine coupled with an electric motor. The hybrid system will be mated to a specially designed Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). Subaru says the system will be fuel efficient and achieve fuel economy of just 20.4 km/liter (JC08 mode). All this will drive the Symmetrical AWD layout that Subaru vehicles are known for.
The batteries and high-voltage components essential to the hybrid system, including the inverter and DC converter, will be stored underneath the rear cargo area. This will ensure a low center of gravity for improved driving dynamics and also feature a flat, user-friendly storage for luggage.
Fuel economy enhanced
Subaru says fuel economy will be enhanced by altering controls to boost regeneration frequency and make active use of battery power. The specially designed Lineartronic automatic CVT features reduced friction and modified torque converter fluid characteristics that enhance fuel economy and Subaru says it will provide a more direct driving sensation.
EyeSight will be standard
Subaru’s latest generation safety system EyeSight is included as standard equipment on both trims. Coordinated control of the hybrid system and EyeSight enables the Eco-Cruise Control function to make the maximum use of electric vehicle driving and regenerative braking when Adaptive Cruise Control is operating, thereby improving fuel consumption under everyday conditions.
Other special hybrid features
Two other upgrades over the standard Impreza will include slightly wider, larger-diameter 215/50R17 wheels to achieve the very best balance between grip and fuel economy. Additional sound insulation and absorption materials to reduce vibration and noise will also be added to the new Impreza hybrid. Hydraulic engine mounts specially designed for the hybrid model will also make for smoother operation. Subaru says passenger compartment comfort has been enhanced.
Exterior and interior features
Impreza Hybrid gets new front and rear exterior enhancements special side-sill spoilers. Hybrid features a roof-end spoiler to enhance aerodynamics and low-energy consumption LEDs in the rear combination lamps. Inside the new hybrid features blue accents, piano-black panels, and metallic trim.
The Impreza Sport Hybrid will launch in Japan with two trims, the Impreza 2.0 EyeSight and 2.0-S EyeSight models. 2.0-S will get additional welcome lighting, black leather Ultrasuede seats with blue stitching, navigation, power seats, LED headlamps and aero body parts.
Subaru will launch the new 2016 Impreza Sport Hybrid in Japan on July 10, 2015. Other global markets can only look and not touch for now. Stay tuned.
