Why Hybrid Cars "Suck?" Not This One, The Toyota Prius, Mechanic Points Out

If You have to have a hybrid vehicle, choose this one: the Toyota Prius.

Here’s a recent Scotty Kilmer YouTube channel episode where in typical Scotty fashion, Scotty teaches the opposite of what his episode title claims. In this case it was a Scotty “Why Hybrids Suck” episode title where Scotty showcases a Toyota Prius with 224,000 miles on it.

In the video, you will quickly realize that this is not about a Hybrid that sucks, but rather a Hybrid that Scotty points out has more good to say about it than what sucks about it.

The Value of This Scotty Kilmer Video

The value of this video is that Scotty goes over the common practical concerns car shoppers would have over whether or not to buy a Prius. Concerns such as:

• Hybrid battery life.
• True mileage---especially after nearly a quarter of a million miles.
• Does this vehicle have the highway traffic passing oomph you need in a small car?
• What repairs to expect.
• Whom should you trust to do those repairs.
• How repair costs compare to an ICE model of the same make.
• Should you buy one of these models used with high mileage on it?

That said, kick back and prepare yourself for 12 minutes of Scotty as he addresses Hybrid shopper concerns and why the Prius is the one to buy today---new or used. And it you are not convinced by what Scotty says, be sure to check out the Prius owner's comments following his video.

My 2012 plug in Prius has 121,000 miles with zero repairs and only the regular battery replaced—didn’t have to, just thought it was time at 100k. It even has the original brakes. At every regular service my mechanic keeps saying I don’t need them replaced yet. The electric battery still charges to the max and I get 45 mpg even after installing larger wheels and super good all weather tires. I live at 6000 feet and regularly go back and forth to sea level. Best car I’ve ever owned by far. Hybrid is the most sensible transportation concept: tons of range and high mpg.

There are plenty of unhappy gen3 Prius owners especially those over 150k-175k miles. Head gaskets that take out the engine. There are several businesses that specialize in this repair on this car. $2k-$3.5k. More for a rebuilt engine. Brake by wire master cylinder $2.5k and only reliably available at the dealer. Excessive oil burning due to low tension rings. Inverters suddenly failing. Oh yes, ten year old hybrids will soon need a $2.5k battery and everything else is used regardless of name, eg "reconditioned" etc. The maddest Prius owner just bought a gen3 and finds a flipper has temporarily sealed a head gasket and learns he still has original brake boosters and hv battery.
