Elon Musk Overdelivers At 10/10 Autonomy Event: Cybercab, Robovan, Optimus, and 50 Autonomous Vehicles In A Futuristic City

Elon Musk has overdelivered in this event. He presented an autonomous city with walking Optimus humanoid robots, the cybercab, the robovan, and other autonomous Tesla vehicles.

Elon Musk has overdelivered with the latest autonomy event that just finished. Let's go over what happened.

Cybercab

First off, Elon Musk showed the Cybercab. It's a two-seater car, with a large trunk space, with butterfly wings that open up to the side, and it doesn't have a steering wheel or pedals. This is very close to what I envisioned it being like.

Elon Musk said the Cybercab will be sold for purchase and will be under $30,000, beginning production sometime in 2026 (before 2027 at the latest).

Elon Musk sees people becoming fleet owners of the Cybercab vehicle, owning 10 to 20 of them and managing them like a shepherd. I plan on getting one whenever it comes out.

This car will have automatic cleaning that takes place after a ride with someone inside.

It will also use induction charging (wireless) with no charging plugs.

This is one of the most important vehicles that will ever be made.

Unsupervised FSD

Elon mentioned that unsupervised FSD will come to hardware 4 vehicles in 2025 in Texas and California to start.

It is most likely that Hardware 3 vehicles, like my 2022 Model 3 RWD, will need to have some kind of upgrade, either in the computer and/or camera setup.

We will see unsupervised FSD in the Cybercab in 2026.

Robovan

Elon Musk showed off the robovan, a large electric van that will seat up to 20 people and will also not have a steering wheel or pedals for its autonomous use.

There was no mention of the timeline for delivery of the robovan, or mention of customizations of the inside of it. I expect these to come over the next couple of years.

Optimus Humanoid Robot

There were many Optimus humanoid robots that were shown dancing, walking around the city, and pouring drinks for people at the bar.

They were also shown waving and interacting with people like a normal person would, and also handed out goodie bags to those at the bar.

Lastly, Optimus was seen playing paper, rock, and scissors with a gal, choosing to do a rock for its first move.

Compact Cars Coming in 2025

No mention of the compact cars coming in 2025 was made, so it looks like Elon wanted to keep the focus on autonomous vehicles like the Cybercab and the existing fleet of Tesla vehicles.

No App

Elon did not show off a ride-sharing app, and if there is one negative about this event, I would say this is it. I would have liked to have seen a ride-sharing app that starts with supervised FSD.

However, an app isn't the hardest part of autonomy - an app is easy to make. The hard part is making autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots.

Final Thoughts

This event was a nice demonstration of the technology of Tesla. For the medium to long term, this is very exciting. For the short term, I expect the stock to drop a bit.

Outside of that, it was amazing to see all the driverless Tesla vehicles and the Optimus humanoid robot interacting with other people.

The future is bright!

Great coverage, Jeremy! I'm surprised the robocab took this shape. Perhaps focus groups helped with its form factor, but that's not at all what I would have designed for city use as a cab.

LOL, you guys are so gullible. The robotaxis drove on a preprogrammed course. Nothing remotely autonomous about them. The rub-a-van is a concept car, nowhere close to production, and a third rate alternative to busses. And the robots were remote controlled teleprsence machines, without even a hint of AI or self mobility. All smoke and mirrors. Everyone in the world sees that but you, which is why Tesla stock fell after this dog and pony shit ahow.

And what about the ~1.5 BILLION test miles that Tesla owners have amassed through the use of Full Self Driving (FSD)? The RoboTaxi event was a product launch. He also happens to be the founder, visionary and chief engineer at SpaceX. I suppose last weeks Starship heavy booster catch was smoke and mirrors too?? 🤡
