There was a post made recently about a 2012 Tesla Model S and a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance. There is a drastic reduction in cost and an increase in performance and features over time.
Tesla Model S, 2012 and Tesla Model 3 Performance, 2023
When I saw a post about the Tesla Model S from 2012 and the Tesla Model 3 Performance from 2023, I noticed two distinct things: Tesla is increasing the value and performance of their vehicles and is also dramatically lowering their costs.
A 2012 Tesla Model S P85 has:
* 265 miles of range
* 4.4 seconds 0-60 mph
* $94,900 starting price
A 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance has:
* 315 miles of range
* 3.1 seconds 0-60 mph
* $50,990 starting price
You get a better car for almost half the cost. As I wrote about recently, this is still very expensive for the average family, and Tesla prices are headed in the right direction. But, they are still not where they need to be for the average auto purchaser.
In another decade, I think we'll see a Tesla Model 3 performance - or comparable vehicle that has:
* 340 miles of range
* 2.8 seconds 0-60 mph
* $29,000 starting price
This will be a fast and luxurious version of the Model 3 if Tesla stays on the path they are with improving their vehicles. However, there is one thing that may stop this from happening...

Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous vehicles may be the one thing that stops Tesla from making an even better and improved version of its Model 3 performance. The reason I think this is that Tesla will most likely have solved FSD and autonomy in the next 10 years.
With a focus on autonomous vehicles, will Tesla continue to improve the performance of their vehicles like they have been doing, or will the focus turn to software?
I think the vehicles will continue to improve over time because an autonomous vehicle from another company that has more range and speed and safety will be more desirable if Tesla isn't best in class for those features as well.
The world is going to be a different place in 10 years. Autonomous vehicles will be much more common place, as will electric vehicles. If you can get an even better Model 3 performance for $29,000 in 10 years, that's going to be pretty incredible.
What do you think about Tesla improving their vehicles over time - will it continue even with autonomous vehicles?
