Tesla's AI team just delivered on all its September 2024, promises. This is just the beginning, and the best is yet to come.

Tesla's AI Milestones for September 2024: A Simple Overview

Tesla, the company known for making electric cars and pushing the boundaries of technology, had big plans for September 2024. They wanted to make their cars even smarter, focusing on something called Full Self-Driving (FSD) which means cars can drive themselves with little to no human help. Let's dive into what Tesla aimed to achieve, what they did achieve, and what's coming next.

The September Goals:

  • Improvement in FSD: Tesla was aiming to make FSD version 12.5.2 better. They wanted to make it so that drivers would need to take over less often when the car was driving itself. This is called reducing the need for interventions.
  • Vision Autopark for Cybertruck: Tesla planned to release an update where the Cybertruck could park itself using cameras, not just sensors, which is a big step towards making cars more like humans in how they see and understand their surroundings.
  • End-to-End on Highway for Cybertruck: This meant the Cybertruck would use a single system (a neural network) to drive on highways from start to finish, making decisions like a human would but with AI.
  • Actually Smart Summon: This feature allows a Tesla owner to summon their car in a parking lot from a parking space to where the owner is standing.

What Tesla Achieved:

  • FSD Improvements: They rolled out FSD v12.5.5 for the Cybertruck, which included the end-to-end highway driving feature. This means the Cybertruck can now drive on highways with minimal human intervention, using AI to make all driving decisions.
  • Vision Autopark: Tesla did start rolling out Vision Autopark for the Cybertruck, allowing it to find a parking spot and park itself just by using its cameras.
  • End-to-End on Highway: Achieved with the Cybertruck, marking a significant leap in how AI handles driving tasks, transitioning from rule-based coding to learning from examples.
  • Actually Smart Summon: Achieved with all vehicles, including the Cybertruck, with numerous videos circulating on X and YouTube showing driverless Tesla vehicles going to their owners in parking lots.

Reflections on the Achievements:

While Tesla met these milestones, there's a bit of debate on how much of an improvement the FSD really is. Critics argue that the celebration might be premature, since the actual improvements in how often drivers need to intervene are still debated.

However, the introduction of end-to-end learning for highway driving is undeniably a step forward in AI technology.

What's Coming After September:

  • October Plans: Tesla is set to release FSD version 13 which promises even more autonomous features like parking, unparking, and reversing in FSD mode. This would mean your car could not just drive, but also handle parking lots and dead ends much more independently.
  • Global Expansion: Tesla is eyeing Europe and China for FSD rollout in early 2025, pending regulatory approval. This expansion could make Tesla's autonomous driving technology available to a much larger audience, significantly impacting how we think about car ownership and transportation.
  • Future Updates: Beyond specific updates, Tesla's roadmap hints at continuous improvement in how cars interact with their environment, aiming for less human intervention and eventually, perhaps, fully autonomous vehicles that can operate without any human oversight.

One might wonder when unsupervised FSD is coming. I think it will come when it is ready and happen, just like supervised FSD happened and was widely released. Some think this will happen in the next year, others think it's a decade away. The answer is probably in the middle somewhere.

Tesla's September was indeed packed with AI milestones, focusing heavily on enhancing the Full Self-Driving capabilities of its vehicles, particularly the Cybertruck. These achievements, while part of a broader plan towards fully autonomous driving, showcase

Tesla's commitment to innovation in AI. As we move into October and look towards 2025, the automotive world watches closely, eager to see how these technologies will evolve and what they might mean for the future of driving. Tesla's journey in AI isn't just about making cars drive; it's about redefining travel, with each update bringing us closer to a world where cars think and learn like humans.

Will the Tesla AI team continue to deliver on all its promises like it did for September 2024?
