Lucid's social media channels have been not-so-subtly hinting that a tri-motor Lucid Air is about to be revealed.
Back in December 2021 we reported on a tri-motor prototype Lucid Air that had been putting in laps at Laguna Seca. With each of Lucid's compact power units capable of making 670 horsepower an Air packing three of them could make as much as 2010 horsepower.
Hints that we could be about to meet a production version at Monterey Car Week have been getting more brazen on Lucid's Twitter account.
First came this tweet, which cryptically told us that "Blue means go" without any other information.
Next, there was this short video which teased three of Lucid's electric motors against a blue backdrop along with some heavily ominous music as befits a vehicle with enough torque to move mountains.
Then there was a tweet telling us to expect something extraordinary and finally we have this video, which appears to show a trio of electric motor stators rotating against a blue background.
It's unclear what the significance of the color blue is at the moment. It could be the name of the model, a la Tesla Plaid, or it could be a special shade of paint unique to the tri-motor (if indeed that's what Lucid is going to reveal).
Beyond Plaid Speed?
Tesla's Model S Plaid, also with three motors, currently holds the crown as the fastest EV sedan as evidenced by these Tesla vs. Lucid vs. Porsche drag races. The prototype tri-motor Air lapped Laguna a second slower than the much more developed Plaid back in December and Lucid will surely want to rectify this.
Lucid is scheduled to make the big reveal this Friday, August 19th at The Quail and we'll have all the details for you as they become available.
