What Are Some Popular Toyota Land Cruiser J250 Mods?

Some of these Toyota Land Cruiser mods are a necessity while others are just there for a personal touch.

There are 14 Toyota Land Cruiser model lines in total, but in 2024, the Japanese SUV got some divisive changes. The J250 Land Cruiser is smaller and now shares a platform with the Lexus GX. The J300 is no more and the same is true for the much-loved V-8 engine. The 2024 Land Cruiser isn't the fastest seller, but I expect things will pick up speed in 2025.

Still, there is a strong Land Cruiser community and we already have some tastefully modified J250s rolling around. As I was doing research, a question popped in my mind: which are the most popular modifications Toyota Land Cruiser J250 owners perform? After scouring Facebook groups, Reddit, and various LC forums, I managed to compile a list of popular J250 modifications.

Lift kit

For many SUV owners, this is a no-brainer. Often, one of the first modifications to any SUV or pickup truck is a suspension lift kit. If the Toyota J250 Land Cruiser's 8.7-inch ground clearance is not enough, there are plenty of lift-kit options, starting from $449.95 to over $5,000, depending on what you are after.

Some lift kits are more comprehensive and include a complete suspension overhaul. Others utilize the stock springs and shocks while adding preload collars. Any of these will greatly increase the J250 Land Cruiser's approach, departure, and breakover angles – 31/22/25 degrees – enhancing the Japanese SUV's off-road capabilities.

Wheels and tires

Toyota Land Cruiser comes with a variety of tire sizes, including 245/70R18, 265/70R18, 275/60R18, and 285/60R18. The all-terrain, TOYO Open Country A/T III is part of the J250 Land Cruiser's original equipment. While Open Country A/T III became the benchmark for all-terrain tires in 2020, other tire companies have caught up.

Many owners opt to change the J250's factory tires as many of these SUVs will be used primarily on public roads and not off-roading. Nevertheless, some off-road enthusiasts choose to outfit the Land Cruiser with Falken Wildpeak AT4W, which is more durable thanks to a three-ply sidewall (versus the Toyo's two-ply) and the company’s Duraspec technology.

As for the wheels, the number of options is immense. Some owners are looking for steel wheels for an old-school look while others opt for alloy wheels with different sizes and ET.

Power inverter

The “U” in SUV stands for utility and a power inverter improves that greatly. Essentially, a power inverter utilizes the direct current (DC) of the car's battery and converts it to an AC power source, allowing you to plug in various appliances like fridges, heaters, portable ovens, and other. Quite handy when camping out in the great outdoors. Options are plentiful and start from as little as $75. More serious hardware can easily set you back upwards of $1,200.

Window tint

The Toyota J250 Land Cruiser has great visibility, courtesy of its boxy design. While you have perfect visibility from inside the spacious cabin, people on the outside can also see you. Many owners looking for more privacy, opt for partial or full window tinting. A common option for some J250 Land Cruiser owners is to match the 32-percent rear-window tint with a similar percentage in the front. According to a forum discussion, prices range from around $200 to $500, depending on what you are looking for.

Roof rack

Toyota Land Cruiser J250 offers 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space, behind the second-row seats (which are foldable, but don't go completely flat). Many owners who pack expedition-style, opt for roof racks, which open up additional cargo space. Some roof racks come with the possibility of fitting top-mounted fog lights. A proper, basket-style roof rack will set you back from $900, but there are more expensive options, including full-length, modular roof racks.

I am sure there are Land Cruiser enthusiasts out here with some very interesting ideas and this is just me scratching the surface. If you think there are other popular or must-have modifications for the J250 Toyota Land Cruiser, feel free to hit the comment section below.
