If you think that you need a diesel to achieve high fuel economy figures on the highway, Audi would like to have a word with you.
The German automaker announced today the 2017 A4 Ultra which achieves 37 mpg on the highway. Other fuel economy figures for the A4 Ultra are 27 mpg for the city and 31 mpg combined. Audi says no other sedan in the class can match the A4 Ultra's fuel economy figures.
How is this possible?
It comes down to the powertrain. The 2.0L TFSI four-cylinder found in the standard A4 has been detuned from 190 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque - standard A4 has 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The engine also features a higher compression ratio - 9.6:1 to 11.7:1. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission routes power to the front-wheels only. No quattro all-wheel drive is available.
Aside from the powertrain, is the A4 Ultra the same as a standard A4?
Very much so. The A4 Ultra's standard equipment list includes a panoramic sunroof, Xenon headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, and three-zone climate control. Options include the Audi virtual cockpit system and Audi Connect that provides a number of services such as traffic and music streaming.
How much for an A4 Ultra?
The 2017 Audi A4 Ultra will begin at $35,850 for the base Premium and $39,650 for the midlevel Premium Plus.
