How much would you be willing to pay for two low-mileage Mercedes-Benz S-Classes from the early nineties? $25,000? $30,000?
How about $300,000? No that isn't a misprint. A seller in New York has put up a pair of the W140-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans on eBay that can be yours for only the price of two Mercedes-AMG S63 sedans.
The folks at Bring A Trailer came across this say the average mileage between the two vehicles is about 887 miles. Details on both sedans are a bit scarce and there isn't a back story as to why or how. Despite the seller saying both models run and drive, it would be wise to have both of these vehicles inspected and have various bits replaced. Not moving for many years can cause havoc to various hoses and fluids.
Tell me about the sedans in question.
First up is a 1992 600SEL with just 1,499 miles on the odometer. Positioned as the flagship of the S-Class, the 600 SEL used a 6.0L V12 producing around 400 horsepower. The interior looks to be essentially a new car with the leather seats showing no cracks and the wood trim looking shiny. As Bring A Trailer notes, the 600SEL would have cost over $150,000 in 1992.
Second is a 1994 400SE with only 275 miles. The 400SE was the entry-level V8 model with 275 horsepower. Like the 600SEL, the interior looks to be untouched.
Is the high price mostly due to the low mileage and condition?
Most likely and if we are being honest, the price is a bit optimistic. The W140-generation S-Class was an important car for Mercedes-Benz as it show the automaker's dominance in the luxury market with impressive engineering and luxurious appointments. But these are your regular S-Class models. They're not really a collectors item at this time and it is unknown if they ever will. Plus, you can find high-quality S-Class models from this generation with a little bit more mileage for a much lower price.
