Why would you want to go to into warp drive when you can go into plaid? That question must have popped into the minds of Ferrari's engineers who were tasked with the successor to the F12berlinetta and the end result will be shown at Geneva next month.
This is the 812 Superfast and while the name is up there with the LaFerrari as being one of the most ridiculous, it does hold an important distinction. The 812 Superfast will have Ferrari's final naturally aspirated V12 engine. The 6.5L V12 produces 789 horsepower and 525 pound-feet of torque. 80 percent of that torque is available at a low 3,500 rpm. This is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The performance figures are staggering: 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph.
The 812 Superfast also has a first for Ferrari; is it the first model from the Italian sports car builder to come equipped with electric power steering. Moreover, the 812 Superfast will debut the second-gen Virtual Short Wheelbase system - a fancy way of saying rear-wheel steering.
Compared to the F12berlinetta, the 812 Superfast has a busier design. The basic shape is the same, but there are more lines and sharp creases to give it a menacing look. Ferrari says the front end has a number of active flaps to improve aero efficiency. The interior come with new seats, instrument cluster, and a display for the passenger.
No word on when the 812 Superfast will go on sale.
