We're a bit worried about Mercedes-AMG as it seems they are going a bit overboard in terms of model introductions.
Just in the past few months, we've seen the SLC43, C63 coupe and convertible, C43 coupe, E43, and the GLC43 crossover and coupe. But Mercedes-AMG is only getting started with this expansion.
"We're going to expand our portfolio to 48 different models by the end of the year," said Tobias Moers, chairman of Mercedes-AMG to Automotive News (Subscription Required).
At the moment, there are currently 38 AMG models in Mercedes' lineup.
So why is AMG going crazy with expansion? It comes down to sales. Last year, sales of AMG models around the world rose 40 percent to 68,875. Mercedes sees the demand for AMG and wants to build upon this with more models. But we can't help but think this expansion is only going to water down the exclusivity of the AMG name. Back in the nineties, there were only a few Mercedes models that were deemed worthy to get the AMG treatment. Now it seems every model is being AMG-ified.
Any ideas on what are the ten models?
The only thing we are certain is that Mercedes is hard at work on the next E63 that will likely use a twin-turbo V8. We wouldn't be surprised if there are more '43' models with the 3.0L Bi-Turbo V6 coming as well.
