Mercedes-AMG GT Concept may cause you to think this is a preview for the next-generation GT coupe, but you would be wrong.
The GT Concept shown this week at the Geneva Motor Show is a preview for a new four-door variant that is expected to arrive within the next couple of years.
It certainly looks like Mercedes' designers took a GT coupe and extended the overall length to create this concept. It isn't a bad thing since the GT is already a sharp looking vehicle and the addition of two extra doors doesn't diminish the look. The front end features the "Panamericana" grille and narrow headlights seen on the coupe. For the back, Mercedes extended the sloping roofline and bulged out the rear fenders to give the concept a distinctive rear end.
Power for the GT Concept is unique in its own right. On the back, the concept has an EQ Power+ badge. We know that Mercedes will be using EQ for a new sub-brand for electric vehicles. EQ Power+ is going to be used for future high-performance hybrid models from AMG. In terms of the GT Concept, it uses a hybrid system paired up with a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 to deliver 805 horsepower. Power goes to all four wheels and Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph run in under three seconds. The GT Concept can also travel on EV power alone, though Mercedes doesn't say how far.
“With the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, we are giving a preview of our third completely independently developed sports car and are extending the attractive AMG GT family to include a four-door variant,” Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG chairman of the board of management, said in a statement.
