It will not be too long before we see the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. But there is a rumor flying around that one engine configuration will not be available.

A report done by Autocar says the top-line CLS model, likely an AMG version, will use a new turbocharged 3.0L straight-six producing 450 horsepower. If this proves to be true, we could be looking at something similar to the E43 (an AMG-lite model) and not a full replacement to the CLS63 AMG.

Why? It comes down to the upcoming AMG GT four-door. By dropping the V8 option in the CLS, it creates space for this new model. The GT four-door is expected to use a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

We'll find out if this rumor pans out in September as Mercedes-Benz is expected to reveal the next-generation CLS at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
