Mercedes-Benz Takes the G-Class Back To Its Roots

When Mercedes-Benz first introduced the G-Class (known as G-Wagen) back in 1979, it was the German equivalent of the Jeep Wrangler; built to go anywhere in the world, with the barest of creature comforts.

The current G-Class has now become a status symbol for the wealthy and it shows with endless chrome, large wheels, and even AMG version with a biturbo V12. But Mercedes-Benz felt it was time to bring the G-Class back to its roots and has introduced the G350d Professional.

What makes the G350d Professional special?

Quoting from Mercedes-Benz's press release, the G350d Professional is a “highly purist variant” that is “ideally suited to grueling off-road use and professional applications”. The purist treatment begins outside with a matte radiator grille, grilles covering the various lights to protect from flying rocks, and 16-inch alloy wheels finished in black wrapped in off-road tires.

The interior loses leather seats (replaced by fabric), carpet (replaced by rubber mats), along with power windows and the infotainment screen. Interestingly, the G350d gets partially power-adjustable front seats.

Aside from the removal of a number of features, the G350d Professional also gets a revised suspension that bumps overall ground clearance by 10mm (0.4 inches). The changes helps improve approach and departure angles (36 and 39 degrees vs. 30/30 on the standard G350d).

So the letter d means this is a diesel?

Yes. The Professional boasts a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 with 245 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and a permanent all-wheel drive with three electric locking differentials.

How much and when can I buy one?

For Germany, the G350d Professional will set you back 79,968 Euros (about $90,728) and that includes a 19 percent value added tax (VAT). If you are in Europe, you can place an order now for delivery in September.
