The last time you found an inline-six sitting under the hood of Jaguar or Land Rover was back 1996. After that point, they switched to V6 engines. But the inline-six is possibly making a comeback.
Car Magazine has learned from sources at Jaguar Land Rover that the company will be phasing out their aging V6 engines for a new inline-six that will be part of the Ingenium engine family. The current Ingenium family is comprised of four-cylinders at the moment. How was JLR able to add two cylinders? The Ingenium engine family was designed to be modular so adding two extra cylinders isn't a big problem.
The new inline-six will be available in gas and diesel forms. Each engine type will offer three different states of tune. The gas engine will be offered in 300, 400, and 500 horsepower versions. Diesel engines will be available in 275, 335, and 400 horsepower versions.
Car says the engine will be available late next year, with the Jaguar XE, XF, F-Pace, and XJ as well as the next Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport. One item that is unknown is which vehicle it will appear in first. Stay tuned.
