Mercedes-Benz's compact lineup is looking to grow once again if a rumor is to be believed.
Autocar reports that Mercedes-Benz is planning to do an entry-level sedan version of the next-generation A-Class to rival the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series sedans. But you might be wondering why Mercedes would do this as they already have a compact sedan in the form of the CLA-Class. We're wondering that ourselves and it gets more confusing as Autocar says the model will slot between the CLA and C-Class. Entry level and somehow fitting between the CLA and C? Our guess as to slotting between the two; the A-Class sedan will ne styled more along the lines of the C-Class and not the coupe-like CLA.
The new sedan will be using the second-generation of Mercedes' modular MFA platform and be slightly bigger in terms of overall dimensions compared to the CLA. There is talk that a long-wheelbase version is being developed for the Chinese market.
A variety of engines will be on offer. Lower end models will get engines from Renault/Nissan while higher end models will get Mercedes' latest 2.0L turbo-four cylinder engines. An AMG version along with a plug-in hybrid is being worked on as well. Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a new nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel drive will be available as an option.
The A-Class sedan could arrive as early as late 2018.
