Earlier this week, Mercedes-Benz introduced the new E-Class Wagon. The new variant of the E-Class is jam packed with the latest technologies, and a lot of practicality. But it seems German luxury automaker was holding something back.
Back in January, we reported on the rumor that Mercedes-Benz was planning to build a competitor to the Audi A6 Allroad. Possibly named the E-Class All-Terrain, the model would likely feature all-wheel drive and a number of improvements to make it somewhat capable off-road.
Autocar has confirmed the existence E-Class All Terrain with Mercedes-Benz and learned that it will be shown later this year at the Paris Motor Show.
The All Terrain will feature Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system and air suspension that will allow the vehicle's ride height to be adjusted whether to go off-road or onto a highway. The engine range will match the current E-Class sedan - four and six-cylinder diesel and gas engines. Outside, the All-Terrain will get new bumpers, cladding around the wheel arches, and underbody protection.
“It won’t be as good as an SUV off road, but it will be able to go farther than most owners will expect,” said Michael Kelz, the chief engineer on the E-Class.
Mercedes is expected to start selling the E-Class All Terrain in Europe next year. At the moment, there are no plans to bring the All Terrain to the U.S.
