The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 combines luxury with off-roading. The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 made its debut during the New York International Auto Show.
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 is designed to take on the off-roading segment of the pickup truck market and kick it up a notch. GMC is adding more luxury appointments to the mix, hoping to make inroads in the market where Ram Rebel and the Ford F-150 Raptor are already popular.
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 is described as confident, athletic and sophisticated. That is an interesting mix when describing a truck, but perhaps perfect for the construction worker or business owner who often needs to go off-road to check on projects.
New GMC Off-Roading Package
Duncan Aldred, the vice president of GMC globally says “The 2019 Sierra AT4 is designed for the customer who wants an elevated presence on the road and the capability to venture off life’s beaten path. It’s also the beginning for the AT4 brand, which will be seen on every vehicle in our lineup in the next two years.”
That means that GMC and its AT4 brand will be trying to move into the off-roading market on a larger scale and challenge Jeep, as well.
GMC claims that the AT4 package is not just for appearances, but will be totally functional off-road. “Sierra AT4 comes standard with a factory installed 2-inch suspension lift that provides additional ground clearance and four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case that includes low-range four-wheel-drive gearing for extremely tough conditions.”
The Sierra AT4 will also have special shock absorbers, Hill Descent Control and a locking rear differential. The locking rear differential directs engine power to both rear wheels equally to help traction on uneven ground.
Special AT4 Appearance Package
Much like the Ram Rebel and the Ford F-150 Raptor, the GMC Sierra AT4 will have a special appearance package. The Sierra AT4 has dark exterior finishes. The front and rear bumpers and the grille surround match the body color. The AT4 will feature a special black chrome grille, set off by the Sierra’s C-shaped LED lighting signature.
The all-new Sierra AT4 also comes standard with the industry-first MultiPro Tailgate. According to GMC, “The MultiPro Tailgate features six unique functions and positions, offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation mode and easier access to items in the box.”
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 will eventually offer GMC’s exclusive carbon fiber box. GMC says the CarbonPro should increase the truck's durability. The carbon fiber box replaces the standard steel inner panels and floor with a lightweight, carbon fiber composite that offers dent, scratch and corrosion resistance.
Matt Noone, the director of GMC exteriors says, “The 2019 Sierra is the boldest expression ever for GMC’s full-size pickup, and the new AT4 reinforces its essence of capability with distinctive, athletic cues. From every angle, it conveys GMC’s premium yet functional design language.”
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 will feature new versions of the 6.2L and 5.3L V-8 engines along with all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel engine.
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 will be available this fall.
It appears that GMC will offer an AT4 off-roading package for all of its vehicles in the future. That would position the GMC Terrain and the Acadia to compete with several of the vehicles in the Jeep line-up.
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 debuted during the New York International Auto Show. The NYIAS is typically where the automakers demonstrate to Wall Street and investors that they are prepared to compete in the future. The sales of trucks and crossovers have continued to surge while car sales are lagging. GMC is showing that they are ready to compete in the off-roading arena.
