Does the Chevrolet Colorado have transmission issues?
Steve, a valued reader of my Chevrolet reports, shared his experience with his 2019 Chevrolet Colorado. His story echoes the experiences of many Chevy owners facing similar reliability issues.
Steve says,
"I have a Chevy Colorado Z71 (2019), which I bought new with a couple thousand miles on it. I always serviced this truck at the dealer. I have done all maintenance, including oil changes, ahead of recommendations. So you know, I also changed the transmission fluid at about 49,000 miles."
"Then, at 55,422 miles, the transmission control mod code came on 75 days out of warranty by time, not miles. The dealer replaced the valve body in the transmission. It was supposed to be a one-day job, but it took nearly 3 weeks and more than $2500."
"On the way home from picking it up, the truck gets a check engine light (code for coolant temperature sensor). Now, the dealer wants to replace it for another $1300. Long story short, I traded that thing in for a different vehicle and just took the loss."
Does the Chevrolet Colorado have transmission reliability issues?
Some Chevrolet Colorado owners have reported transmission issues, including rough shifting, shuddering, and slipping, particularly in the 2018 and 2021 model years.
A Reddit user, InflictPain, says,
"I have a 2020 Colorado WT. I bought it with 27000 miles, and it currently has about 33000 miles. I had to take it in, and they are replacing the transmission. My issues were rough shifting, and the reverse wouldn't engage without giving it a little bit of gas. They also told me transmissions were on back order."
timesnack says, "I just had an issue with my 2020 GMC Canyon w/2.8 (built July 2019) at 38k. I noticed a shudder and took it in. The dealership replaced the torque converter but did not flush trans fluid; it only topped it off…. I still had issues with rough shifts. I thought it might be the transmission relearning, but after a week, I thought it checked the level. The level was OK, but the fluid was burnt! 1. I was surprised that fluid flush wasn't part of the TC swap. 2. I was surprised to see it burnt. Only pull boat/trailer ~3k lbs a few times a year. I was disappointed the dealerships didn't recommend or even try to "upsell" me a trans flush. They mentioned they were really busy."
The Lemon Law Experts say,
"The 2021 Chevy Colorado owners have reported various transmission problems, including rough shifting, shuddering, shaking, slipping, leaks, fluid contamination, and more."
"Consumers also note issues when attempting to shift the vehicle into park, leaving them unable to shut off their vehicles."
Here's a more detailed look at the issues:
- Common Complaints: Owners have reported various transmission problems, including rough shifting, shuddering, shaking, slipping, leaks, and fluid contamination.
- Specific Model Years: Some complaints are more prevalent in particular model years, such as the 2018 and 2021 Colorado.
- Transmission Shudder: A common issue owners report is a transmission shudder, which can occur while driving.
- 2018 Colorado: Consumers mention the transmission suddenly losing power, shifting hard, slipping between gears, causing shuddering while driving, and surging forward while accelerating.
- 2021 Colorado: Owners have reported various transmission problems, including rough shifting, shuddering, shaking, slipping, leaks, fluid contamination, and more.
What Should Chevrolet Colorado Owners Do Now?
If you experience any of these issues, having your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible is recommended.
What Does Chevrolet Say?
Burlington Chevrolet has been refreshingly transparent about the known issues with the Chevy Colorado. Their openness provides owners with the information they need to make informed decisions.
They say, "The Chevy Colorado transmission has some problems, and while it's not as bad as an outright failure, this will cause your vehicle to shake. This problem can be annoying, but it's better to try to resolve it as soon as possible. The engine has a few problems, ranging from leaking oil to complete failures."
Wait There's More
The Chevrolet Dealer says, "The engine had reported to have problems starting or dying by itself."
"The drivetrain shares the same issues as the transmission, but that's as it's tied to the transmission. Some other issues for Colorado's drivetrain are chattering and thumping as the truck starts up."
The A/C Also Has Reliability Issues
"The AC also sees some problems. While not as dangerous as some of the other problems, this one could make it unbearable to be in your truck. This problem causes your AC to blow either only hot or cold air. While blowing only hot air in the winter here in New Jersey doesn't sound too bad, when those temperatures start to rise, that becomes a problem."
Conclusion:
Steve was fed up with his Chevy Colorado issues and traded the pickup for a new vehicle. He was willing to take a loss on the truck.

I have a 2019 Colorado Z71, and at 55,000 miles started feeling the tranny slip every now and then and shift hard, but at 60,000 I felt the first shudder. Did some research and found out the dealers have a recommended full multiple flush with Mobile 1 ATF. I had the local dealer do it and I'm at over 72,000 miles now and the truck has driven like new ever since. It’s not cheap (around $700) but it definitely solved the issues.

In most cases a trans flush is the worst thing you can do. Better to drop the ( replace with one equipped with a drain) drain & replace the filter. Do this 3 times to get all the fluid out of the torque converter. When you flush. Any contaminates are pushed into all the tiny passages, into the lines and cooler as well as the torque converter. That being said I wish the U.S. vehicle manufacturers. Would bring back manual trans options. I've never experienced a manual Trans failure EVER!!! But every auto trans I've ever owned has failed sooner or later.

Ted Wright is correct, my 2017 Colorado (new) w/ 3.6 8 speed was doing the same thing as stated. And the dealer did exactly what Ted has stated and was the cure to those issues, I did have the dealer do another drain and refill at around 45k miles and the truck now has about 77k miles and so far it's been good. Hope that helps, good luck

Most new American cars are good for just 4 year lease just before the warranty expires, long gone are the days when you could own a car for 10 years. I used to buy cars and keep them for about 10 years, now I just buy cars from Japan or Korea or as my wife does just leased them.

I have 2015 Colorado LT with 96k and have never had a trans issue, but I understand the trans is different than newer ones. Always dealer serviced and I have had to add a qt of oil after 3k on a oil change...it doesn't leak...no one knows. Also, during this winter in Fl, I noticed it wasn't putting any heat out until I got moving....Put 2qts antifreeze in and fixed it, so much for the dealer checkin stuff

I have a 2017 Colorado purchased new. At about 35,000 miles the rough shifting started. Took it in to the dealer. They said it is a known problem here in the southeast. Water in fluid from condensation. They changed the fluid & filter and it’s been fine since then. Have about 70K on it now and wonder if it will happen again.

My 2017 started to shudder around 30,000 miles. Dealership flushed and filled with new fluid under warranty. No shudder until around 100,000 miles when it started shuddering again. This time I just added lube guard instant shudder fix myself and its worked for 10,000 miles. Just recently the rear main seal and starter have both failed. Hope you have better luck.

Dealer could never fix it while under warranty so I made a seen on the showroom floor and made them buy it back 😡

My 2017 chevy colorado WT 6 cylinder has transmissions issues. They had to change the transmission fluid twice. Unfortunately it happened once under warranty. It has the most issues with the first two gears, tugging and switching gears. When it gets worse it has issues with all gears. It shudders quite a bit.

I'm also currently in the process of trading in my 2019 Colorado for a huge loss. I've only had it a few months and it only has 34k miles, but I've already sank so much into the transmission and it's still not fixed so I'm taking my losses now. I will never trust the 8l45 transmission, and I will likely never buy Chevrolet again. I loved my first gen Colorado so I decided to take a chance on the second gens. Save yourself, don't do it!

Just got rid of my 2021 Colorado WT.
Had the shuddering problem not just once but twice. Dealer said it needed to be driven at least 200miles in a single trip at least twice a year so that any condensation could evaporate. It didn't make sense to me. Good by GMC. Had 26000 miles.

I have a 2017 Colorado WT. Bought it used with 45 K. Driving it home from dealer had shuttering at 55 mph. Called dealer ( not a Chevy dealer) and he said it might be tires which I needed new so replaced them same problem. Returned truck and they took it to Chevy dealer there was a recall for it and they did a trans flush with Mobil 1 blue which fixed the problem. Currently have 130k on the truck and have flushed it twice once because the trans temp sensor went bad and they had to remove the trans cover to replace harness and another time because I insisted on it plus a filter replacement. Dealer costs are outrageous and I was stuck with them now I have a local mechanic and hope the price will be better.

I have a 2016 Colorado base model 4 cyl. with the 6 speed auto transmission. Around 15000 miles I had shuttering and skipping. If I accelerated hard it wouldn't be as bad. I think the shift points are to close. In Manuel control I can shift at 3000rpm and it's fine. Dealer says can't be reprogrammed and the 6 speed transmission is a sealed component , no fluid dip stick to check levels. I have found a service bulletin that Chevy put out in 2024 for servicing these exact problems. The dealer plays dumb on these issues. Oh and by the way Chevy has a recall on the 8 speed transmissions due to a class action law suit. So if yours is an 8 speed look into it! Mine is not in the recall.......yet

Bought a 2017 Colorado, Midnight Edition brand new and loved it for a while. Soon after purchase I received a recall for oil pump replacement. Following that I began having transmission shuddering issues prior to 25,000k. Dealer replaced tourque converter under warranty. That took care of the shuddering, but soon after I began experiencing hard downshift when letting off the gas pedal. This made me nervous as I was out of warranty even though I was only slightly over 25,000k. I now drive a 2023 Frontier Pro4X. Laugh if you want but so far no recalls, no breakdowns, no trips to dealer beyond oil change. 0$ for maintenance. No complaints.

Purchased a 2016 Colorsdo Crew Cab LT with the 2.8L diesel as a 16k mile certified vehicle from a GMC dealer in 2017. Loved the truck until 2018 with about 20k miles the trans started slipping and hard shifting. Took it back to dealer and they reprogrammed it. Problem continued, I took it back a few more times, they replaced the torque converter, a month later the truck was stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. Took it back again. This time the mechanic found wire chafing on the wire harness, not one. Not 2, but 7 of them. Repaired them and all my problems went away until 2025 and 95k miles, when towing a 7k trailer it started shifting into 3rd hard. I took it to the Chevy dealer and had the trans flushed. Have towed a 7k trailer over 4k now with no problems since the flush.
I was about ready to trade my Colorado in 2018 when it was just totally unreliable, I'm glad now that I did not, only other issue I've had is a phantom voltage draw on the battery I've not found yet but I put a remote battery disconect on it that cuts the battery off at under 11.5v if the truck is not running and zi just push a keyfob button hanging from my rear view mirror and pwr is restored. Not a fix but it works. This Midsize with the 2.8L diesel pulls a 7k enclosed 8.5ft wide tall trailer 70 mph down the highway pretty darn well occasionally, for regular daily towing of a load that size. I'd upgrade to a full sized 150 or 250 but for occasional such towing it dose the job well at about 12.5 mpg, 25 to 32 mpg when not towing.

I was having an issue with my 2018 Colorado shuttering and shifting hard. I was told by a dealer as well as two other transmission shops that the transmission would need replacement. A friend that works at a dealer as a mechanic offered to take it for the day to do a transmission flush, he said there was no guarantee but worth a try. The cost was less than $250, two years and 40k miles later no transmission issues. I guess the point is it’s worth a try to do the flush. There are so many reported issues should be a recall?
