The newly redesigned 2018 Chevrolet Traverse may be nearly 400 pounds lighter but it looks a lot more like the bigger truck-like SUVs.
Chevrolet rolled out the 2018 Traverse mid-size SUV at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit. It looks much more truck-like, a smaller version of the popular Suburban or Tahoe. It is sleeker and lighter than the old Traverse, but its wheelbase is longer by a couple of inches.
Chevrolet is promising that the eight-passenger vehicle will still be roomier than its competitors, and has better storage, because of compartments built into the floor.
In a statement, Alan Batey, GM’s North America president says, “The all-new Traverse offers the ultimate in style and convenience for the segment, with the versatility customers need and a thoughtful, spacious design they’ll love. It’s the midsize SUV designed to help keep you safe, comfortable and connected.”
The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse features a new 3.6L V-6 paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It is expected to get 25 mpg highway, an improvement of about 2 mpg over the current model.
It is expected to come with all the latest bells and whistles, including a rear seat that tips up and slides forward to make it easier to get into the third row. It is also promising that the third row will get the most legroom available in the segment. It will also have the Teen Driver software so that owners can set limits and monitor their teen’s driving. The Traverse will also be equipped with the rear seat reminders, to alert drivers if a child is still in the vehicle.
The 2018 Traverse will offer the latest in technology including “exclusive D-Optic headlamps that provide a natural daylight effect with a seamless light quality.” It will also offer the latest in collision alerts and assisted-braking.
The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse will also debut two new trim levels. There will be a RS sport package and a “High Country” luxury trim. The Chevy Silverado is currently the only other vehicle with a “High Country” version.
The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. Originally, the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and Saturn Outlook were all sister vehicles. The Saturn Outlook was discontinued after GM eliminated Saturn. The vehicles’ similarity was changed recently when the GMC Acadia was down-sized.
This is the first big redesign of the Chevrolet Traverse, although it has had facelifts over the years.
