The vehicles are being recalled over running lights that don't turn off correctly.

General Motors is expanding a recall that it already has in place to fix daytime running lights that don’t turn off when a vehicle’s headlights turn on. The recall now affects 825,000 trucks, SUVs and cars. 740,108 of those vehicles are in the U.S., another 85,685 in Canada. The recall now includes some of GM's most popular vehicles like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Sierra1500 and Yukon.

Vehicles Added to Running Light Recall

As we first reported in November, GM started recalling 2021 Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans, Cadillac Escalades and ESVs, GMC Yukons and Yukon XLs. This new recall adds certain 2022 and 2023 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Yukon SUVs. It also includes Cadillac CT4s and CT5s from the 2020 to 2023 model years, as well as Buick Envisions from 2021 to 2023.

The Problem Forcing the Recall

NHTSA says that having all the lights on at the same time could cause glare for oncoming drivers and increase the possibility of a crash. It is also against federal motor vehicle safety guidelines. GM says it has no reports of any crashes or injuries because of the running light situation.

How GM Will Fix the Running Light Problem

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail about the recall. Some of the letters will start going out next week, others on January 23rd. GM will have dealers update the software that controls the running lights or in some cases, it may be able to fix the software through over-the-air updates.
