Volkswagen, apparently to keep similar recalls together, yesterday issued three fuel system recalls covering nearly 300,000 VW and Audi cars and crossovers.
Nearly 300,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles were recalled Friday. Though the problems involved a common issue, the fuel system, the causes are different, a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.
A total of three recalls were issued. The first involved VW brand vehicles, while the second and third involved Audis. About 110,037 Volkswagen vehicles were involved in the first recall.
According to the automaker, no one has been injured, and there have been no fires attributed to the fuel leaks.
VW Brand Models Affected
The Volkswagen models affected include the 2015-16 VW Golf, VW SportWagen and GTI. No further details were available from Volkswagen about the fuel system problems affecting its brand vehicles. And, the automaker did not say if the problems involved vehicles outside of the U.S.
The second recall includes 2009-12 Audi Q5 and 2007-12 Audi Q7 crossovers. According to the NHTSA, 143,214 gasoline-driven vehicles took part in this recall.
The defect notice for this recall said that the “filter housing of the fuel pump (part of the fuel cap flange)
may develop fine cracks/fissures resulting in a fuel leak or fuel small.”
In two departures from standard operating procedure, neither the safety agency nor the automaker has any idea about the cause, and there are not enough replacement parts to fix the vehicles.
More specifically, Audi plans to issue preliminary recall notices to owners beginning in November that announce the recall. There will be a follow-up notice when the parts become available. Usually, an automaker will have sufficient replacement parts available when a recall is announced.
Recall’s Cause Still Unknown
Meantime, the safety agency doesn’t have a firm idea about the cause of the fissures. However, there has been some suggestion that corroded flange assemblies might be to blame. It is possible that liquid from outside the fuel pump is causing the corrosion.
The fix involves cleaning the flange mentioned in the notice and installing a butyl rubber band. It is believed that this will provide protection for the fuel pump of the Q5s and Q7s involved.

The third safety campaign relates to a fuel pump hose that can degrade over time and which can, in turn, lead to fuel leakage that could cause a fire. It involves 28,249 2012-13 Audi A6 and A7 models.
Hose, Fuel Pump Replacement
Dealers will replace the hose and fuel pump for free. Audi has yet to notify NHTSA when it will mail recall notices to owners.
