Volkswagen has been honored with an AVT ACES Award for its flexible MEB electric vehicle platform. The MEB platform can be used for vehicles ranging from hatchbacks to SUVs, like the VW I.D. family of vehicles.
If you have been following the new vehicles coming from Volkswagen, you may have noticed the recurring reference to the MEB platform. It is the platform underlying the new generation of electric cars using the same fundamental underpinnings. Indeed, it is interesting to note the ways that Volkswagen has already used the platform. It is the basis for a new family for vehicles – the I.D. series. To illustrate the versatility of the MEB, VW’s designs already include an SUV, a minivan or MPV (multi-people vehicle), and a hatchback, among other machines.
The MEB Platform Is Quite Versatile
In other words, the MEB platform is not only versatile, but is also, if you will, technology forward. Technology forward means using today's technology for tomorrow’s cars. Recognizing this, Autonomous Vehicle Technology (AVT) has named Volkswagen winner of the 2019 AVT ACES awards.
AVT recognizes the most innovative technologies, products, and services in the areas of:
- Autonomy
- Connectivity
- Electrification
- Mobility
The MEB platform was honored for being the advanced technology VW plans to use to make EVs affordable. By using this platform, the automaker is using technology to cut its costs so it can mass-market affordable electric vehicles (EV). In this manner, the carmaker, which wants to be the major player in the electric vehicle market, seeks to market affordable EVs starting in 2020. VW’s I.D. family of cars, which draws its inspiration from the I.D. VIZZION, I.D. CROZZ, AND THE I.D. BUZZ concept vehicles already shown at car shows in Europe and the U.S., will take the design and create visionary designs in the longer term.
VW Executive Enthusiastic About Platform
Matt Renna, VW’s vice president of e-mobility and innovation, said the company is honored “to be recognized for the MEB platform.” He continued enthusiastically that Volkswagen is “committed to making the electric future of the auto industry a reality.” He finished up by saying that the automaker believes “the technology and scale of the MEB platform can do that.” MEB will serve as the platform for millions of EVs in the future as the architecture cuts costs and EVs become more affordable.
The significant elements of the MEB platform – the modular electric drive matrix – include an electric motor integrated into the rear axle with power electronics and a transmission, a high-voltage flat battery pack installed in the vehicle floor to save space and auxiliary powertrains combined into the front end of the vehicle.
The MEB architecture will also enable assistance, comfort, infotainment, control, and display systems integration in vehicles across the board.
