The 2018 Elantra GT will be making its debut at the Chicago Auto Show next week, which hopes to be the start of Hyundai getting back on top for 2017.
At present, we've only had a few teaser images and videos to give us any idea of the upcoming 2018 Elantra GT compact hatch, but all will be revealed next week at the Chicago Auto Show where the car will be revealed in all its glory. The European Hyundai i30 was revealed at the Paris Motor Show a few months back which gave us all a general idea of what the American counterpart version, the Elantra will look like.
The North American version is still largely under wraps, but what we do know is the interior shots so far show red stitching and traits similar to the 2017 Elantra Sport sedan with a possible 1.6 L turbocharged engine with similar outputs as now of 201HP and 195 lbs. ft. of torque. The Elantra GT could come with a 2 L naturally aspirated engine giving 173 HP for the US market.
The Elantra is just one of the models being revamped for 2017/18, with recent sightings of a mini crossover, the Sonata and Veloster in a camouflaged state having been seen tested on the roads recently. This means that the Hyundai lineup seems to be getting quite a shakeup, especially with reports over the last year of declining profits in some areas, not enough emphasis on the SUV market and too many fleet sales. Its the SUV crossover market which Hyundai need to make up the most ground within and you can bet that over the next two years the company will make serious inroads with new models and updates to existing vehicles.
You should expect new B-segment vehicles in the shape of subcompact crossovers along with redesigns of the Santa Fe Sport for 2018 and the Tucson. The Ioniq with its electric and hybrid variations should be big players for Hyundai in the next few years, along with a push of their Genesis brand and the G80 Sport, which should push the luxury end of the offerings. According to some reports, Hyundai are aiming for 1 million units being sold in the United States by 2020 from Hyundai and Genesis lines and an increase to 5 CUVs by the same year.
It's clear that Hyundai have seen the deficiencies in their lineup, which means in the coming few years the company will be able to offer a much wider breadth of vehicles to fill all the gaps in the market from sedans, SUVs and the EV market. The company may not be sexiest brand on the market compared to some, but you can bet that each vehicle offering will fulfil the needs of most drivers out there and at a price point which like today, gives you arguably some of the best deals for your money along with features. With seemingly something for everybody to choose from in the Hyundai range, it's arguable that Hyundai will be one of the big players from now on.
