These nifty upgrades can improve looks and function for your Toyota 4Runner. How does our list compare with yours?
Vehicle accessories are big business. Very big business.
Owners all around the world spend huge bucks each year to upgrade their cars, trucks, and SUVs. These accessories are designed to improve styling and looks, convenience, protection, and performance.
For this story I am going to focus primarily on Toyota 4Runner.
Ways to accessorize your 4Runner
Toyota 4Runner is one of the toughest SUVs on the planet. It was built with its body-on-frame design to withstand harsh terrain and tough obstacles.
This does not mean, of course, that factory-built 2021 4Runner vehicles do not need to be upgraded to meet your needs.
There are four main places you can accessorize your 4Runner.
First, at the factory level. This is where primary fixtures are included. The multimedia system, a moonroof, or seating choices may be included here.
Second, at the regional assembly port. There are several of these ports in the United States. This is where floor mats, running boards, and other individual items are added to finish vehicles off before they reach dealerships.
Next, dealers can add accessories. You can add in options that are not on your 2021 4Runner when you buy it, but you still want included in the purchase or even after the sale. Perhaps you can add step bars, window tint, leather seats or body side molding.
Finally, you can install accessories yourself at home. This can include practically any option you want or need to “make it your own.”
2021 Toyota 4Runner accessories
I recently created a video showing several options and accessories that can be installed in addition to stock factory features.
Here are some of the highlights you can use to upgrade your Toyota 4Runner, whether it is a 2021 4Runner or earlier year.
Brake Caliper Covers
The red brake caliper covers in the video make this 4Runner stand out. Especially with black and red TRD wheels.
Touch Keypad
This is a feature offered in the Southeast region. It is a clever way to lock and unlock your 4Runner just by entering the number code you pick yourself. The perfect way to get into your car – without needing your keys with you.
Console Safe
An excellent hidden and secure place to store your valuables. Maybe your wallet or a firearm or keys or purse. Or the stolen plans to the Death Star.
LED illumination packages
This feature is a win for both looks and function. Brighten up your vehicle in the most important spots with both interior and exterior LED lighting.
Sliding rear cargo deck
This is a factory-installed option in the cargo area. The sliding cargo deck pulls out and you can use it as a work bench or a place to sit. Holds up to 440 pounds.
Front USB ports
Connectivity is the name of the game these days. Since 2 rear USB ports were made standard on all 4Runner trims for 2020, just the front passenger seating area needs improvement. Add 2 more up front.
Running boards and step bars
There are so many different ways to go here. You can add bars or boards to help you step up into your Toyota 4Runner. They can be black or chrome-edged or maybe a funky color combination that is perfect for you.
Black emblem overlays
Black out the trim level logos and the Toyota symbol. This replaces the chrome or matte gray lettering found at the factory level. Adds another level of toughness to your 4Runner.
Clear paint protection
Protect high-traffic areas of your car with clear paint protection. This typically comes in door package or hood package. You can protect the sides of your doors, inside the door handles, on the backs of the outside mirrors and on the entire hood.
Cargo mat
This is one of my favorites. It is also one of the most forgotten and overlooked 4Runner accessories. I suggest getting an all-weather cargo tray/mat. Put your muddy shoes, sports equipment, hiking gear, potting soil, and mulch on the mat and then just spray it off after use. No reason for your Toyota 4Runner to get dirty and stay soiled.
Time for your Toyota 4Runner thoughts

The pretty stuff means
The pretty stuff means nothing on the trail. If you're headed for a trail, remove the running boards before a rock or stump does. They're damage multipliers. Get some real sliders. If you're not headed to a trail, why get a 4Runner?

Such a typically douchey
Such a typically douchey response. Maybe people get them to go into the wilderness without having to prove how 'tough' and 'cool' they are. Or maybe they get them because they like them and want to drive them in their own way. Or maybe they get them for a bit of both plus they can and want to own one. You're an elitist punk.
You're an elitist you-know
You're an elitist you-know-what. People don't have to be as 'cool and tough' as you to want to and actually own one.
