Some signs point to an official Toyota announcement on its next-gen 2022 Tundra coming soon. Here is what we know.
Many Toyota Tundra fans, and just truck fans in general, have been waiting patiently for quite some time. Some not so patiently, as you may expect.
You see, 2022 Tundra is due a major redesign. And we could be hearing more news sooner than later.
2022 Toyota Tundra
The last big Tundra redesign was in 2007. Since then, there have been refreshes to the exterior, interior, safety systems and technology.
No redesigns during this span, though.
Certainly nothing quite as bold as what we are expecting with the 2022 Toyota Tundra.
“Old reliable” and trusty 5.7-liter V8 engine is expected to disappear. In its place, well that is where plenty of speculation is swirling in Toyota and automotive circles.
Many say Tundra will be getting a twin-turbo V6 engine. Others claim there will be a hybrid gasoline-electric combo alternative as well.
Either way, expect big leaps in overall power. Horsepower, torque, mpg, towing capacity and payload.
RELATED STORY: How powerful is 2021 Tundra TRD Pro?
As reported by Gear Patrol, a new version Land Cruiser may be in the works overseas for 2022 or 2023. This could pack a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine under its hood. This may also be matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Could this be tied to what we will see with next-gen Tundra?
2022 Tundra Announcement
New model year vehicles, including redesigns, are typically launched anywhere between spring and end of the year. If you follow the automotive industry, you know what I mean when I talk about this huge time range.
We expect 2022 Tundra to reach Toyota dealerships across the country around the end of 2021. This gives us many months to learn more information.
Toyota is very good about keeping news and details close to the vest. We will know specifics when they want us to know. Toyota will more than likely begin releasing information to us in increments. Probably monthly.
But when?
Typically, Toyota has announced some of its big news and new model launches during the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Last year Toyota debuted Highlander XSE. We also learned about Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner Trail and Nightshade Editions.
This year, however, we will not see the Chicago Auto Show in February. It was scheduled to run from February 13th through February 21st. It has been postponed for obvious reasons.
Tundra Super Bowl Tease
Another possibility that has been rumored is a teaser commercial that will air during this week’s Super Bowl. Nothing has been confirmed at all. I have heard this thought from a few sources, but nothing I would consider concrete or reliable. Perhaps just wishful thinking.
Super Bowl would be an ideal time to raise a tremendous amount of attention to next-gen 2022 Toyota Tundra.
Just not sure if we will see this or not.
Time for your thoughts on Toyota Tundra
Again, I have heard from multiple sources that a new Tundra announcement is expected sometime in February.
However, considering all factors going on in the world, this timeline is more than likely extremely fluid and can change and perhaps has changed.
It is entirely possible that Toyota will hold a separate launch party of its own to introduce 2022 Tundra to the world.
For selfish reasons, I hope this launch comes sooner than later.
Are you looking forward to learning more about the next-gen Tundra?
What specs are you hoping for with this latest generation? What factors are most important to you?
Thanks for reading everyone. See you next story when I ask the question if Toyota Camry is powerful enough.

Hi Jim! Thanks for reading the story. I wish there was more concrete information right now. I'll stick to what I've heard. I might end up being wrong, but I expect some sort of announcement this month.
I Understand. However, this
I Understand. However, this has been reported everywhere for quite a while and if I am not mistaken, by TorqueNews previously. Don't understand the point of the article unless it is to keep TorqueNews in everyone's mind and NOT the Tundra.
But, I commend you taking the time to respond.

It is all speculation as to
It is all speculation as to when Toyota will show their cards. I love the fact that there are no leaks and no premature launches (Bronco) to build insane hype. If it's one thing this situation the world is in right now has taught me is to have patience. I have a current Tundra and the capability and reliability of the truck is outstanding (as we all know). If the new Tundra gains more on the capability side then I will consider it. Otherwise it's old reliable for me.
Hi Dan! Thanks so much for
Hi Dan! Thanks so much for reading my story. Somehow Toyota manages to keep surprises and spoilers. I have no clue how they do it. Nothing wrong at all with old reliable!
I’m very confident we’re
I’m very confident we’re going to see the all-new Tundra in all its glory Super Bowl Sunday. Toyota showed us the all-new for 2019 RAV4 during the Super Bowl in 2019, the all-new for 2020 Highlander during the Super Bowl in 2020. I don’t think this year will be any exception.
I bought the 07 Tundra new
I bought the 07 Tundra new and am still happy after 150,000 miles. Now I hope the 2022 will have at least a 2,300 lb++ Bed capacity so it will cary a light cab over camper and tow a lighter trailer combined. I do not want to buy domestic because of reliability issues I have experienced. If it is a hybrid and I can get some great mileage out of the deal...all the better. Please Toyota come through for me on this. Offer a Tundra Camper Special! My current truck is 15 years old now and I just broke it in, but my needs have changed. This wouldbe my 4th New Toyota truck and I am looking forward to another 15 years of reliable service.
That's my 2 cents.

I'm all about fuel economy,
I'm all about fuel economy, but I didn't buy my 2016 Tundra for fuel economy. I bought it for the raw power and torque the 5.7 brings. I really wish Toyota would be a little more versatile and keep the 5.7, but also produce a V6 if that's what people want, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I wish they'd provide us a Diesel motor. I use my 5.7 for towing and wish they'd get onboard with other similar Diesel motored trucks like Nissan, Dodge and others in the same class and size.
I hope they maintain the 5.7
I hope they maintain the 5.7 liter V8 as well,I'm not a turbo fan.
Um, was this a “story” of
Um, was this a “story” of some sort??? It wasn’t even worth clicking on.
Well Toyota missed an
Well Toyota missed an opportunity for a commemorative 20th anniversary edition, so I hope they’ll consider some new editions for the next model. The lineup needs more diversity in the trim levels and trim availability with name recognition. The 1794 is a beautiful truck but it deserves a better name. No one gets the significance of the name unless they’re from Texas and know the history of Spanish land grants. Toyota needs to get reacquainted with Lucchese and forge another license agreement and once again produce “Lucchese Edition” Tundras.
Toyota also has potential to more fully develop the TRD Sport (no, I’m not talking about the TRD Pro). TRD Sport as it stands now, is nothing more than a TSS with a different name. If we’re talking about a new model 2022 with a possible engine change, then how about offering a sportier “street truck” option and not just a “grade” model with trim and decals that were tacked on at the regional Toyota distributor?? How about paddle shifters so we can fully enjoy the engine??
Jeff, I have no interest in
Jeff, I have no interest in another Tundra, however I am in the market for a large SUV like the Sequoia. Since the Tundra/Sequoia are so similar has there been any information on when the Sequoia will be updated to the next generation?
“Old reliable” and trusty 5.7
“Old reliable” and trusty 5.7-liter V8 engine is expected to disappear."
Why do you repeat unsubstantiated rumors? Toyota has been silent on this and someone started this rumor and everyone is repeating it, including you.
What is the point of having a turbo V6 in a truck anyway? Small displacement engine are bad for heavy towing/hauling. They consume more fuel than V8s and also have less engine braking. Of all pickup manufacturers, only one (Ford) offers a turbo V6 - all, including Ford, offer naturally aspirated V8s.
You really should define some standards for articles you publish. Unless you only care about traffic and revenue.
I agree with you that unless
I agree with you that unless it comes from Toyota press room then you cant really trust the info. I will say that if they do go to a twin turbo V6 you can blame the Govt. mandates that keep raising the Fuel economy bar. Not that the Tundra couldn't stand getting better MPG's.
I've worked for Toyota for 10 years now and am a believer in the Hybrid Tech. If it can help a truck get massive gains in HP/torque then i'm all for it. And if it comes in the form of a V6 Turbo charged engine/hybrid electric motor I don't really care. I trust that when Toyota delivers a final product that they have put it through its paces/stress tests etc and will be just as reliable and long lasting as the 5. 7
As long as it doesn't get any
As long as it doesn't get any longer ( I really want it to fit in my garage) and has vastly improved gas mileage (when not towing) the other 350 days out of the year I will be more than happy. I also hope they keep the huge rear seat in the crew cab

Diesel would of been a better
Diesel would of been a better choice..plus without torque the ten speed will be busy shifting all the time.Toyota makes really good diesel, I just wish they bring them here to US and blow the competition out of the water..
