We may have clues on 2025 4Runner engine choices from the reveal of 2024 Tacoma.
Two of the most commonly asked questions from my “ToyotaJeff Reviews” YouTube channel viewers are about 4Runner and Tacoma.
“When will 4Runner be redesigned?” They wonder.
“When is the new Tacoma body style coming?” They question.
Fortunately, Toyota Tacoma is all-new for 2024 model year and made its world debut this past week (including new trim TRD PreRunner).
Now, major attention will be put squarely on the next generation 2024 4Runner (or 2025 4Runner).
2025 Toyota 4Runner
No information has been given or disclosed by Toyota about what model year we are even supposed to look forward to. We could see the new 4Runner either for 2024 or 2025 model years.
My guess is that we should look for a brand new 2025 4Runner, simply because it is already late May and we have absolutely nothing to go on – not even a legitimate clue.
Clearly Toyota will be looking to make a statement here – modern exterior styling, fresh new interior cabin, all-new features and technology, along with plenty of shiny bells and whistles.
And, of course, a shiny new powertrain.
2023 Toyota 4Runner Engine
People looking to buy a current 2023 4Runner will find one engine choice. Look for a 4.0-liter V6 matched with a 5-speed automatic transmission. This produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque.
Although many 4Runner fans feel current power numbers are just fine, most would agree that a big jump in power is both welcomed and necessary.
Will it come from 2024 Tacoma though?
2024 Toyota Tacoma Engine
The fourth generation Tacoma features a few different engine and powertrain options for buyers to choose from.
First, the SR entry trim level comes standard with a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This delivers 228 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. torque.
Next, i-FORCE powertrain for multiple grades has a 2.4-liter turbo too, but with plenty more power. This is either paired with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. Manual produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. torque and automatic makes 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. torque.
The 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE Max utilizes this same 2.4-liter turbo but adds in electric motor power. People can expect an impressive 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. torque.
Based on these choices, can we extrapolate some of this data for next-gen 4Runner?
Time for Your Toyota 4Runner Comments
My guess is for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner we will have two powertrain options. It would not surprise me to see a base turbocharged engine and one matched with electric motor power as well.
I think many 4Runner fans are indeed ready for a 4Runner hybrid, and they would welcome both the increase in power and fuel economy.
How do you feel about the next Toyota 4Runner and what would you like to see most? Are you actively following 4Runner news for clues on what will come next?
Thanks for reading everyone. See you next story.
