It has been almost a full month since the earthquake, tsunami and string of nuclear explosions rocked the Japanese auto industry and this week, Ford Motor Company has stopped production for the week of April 4th at their Louisville truck plant and the Flat Rock Mustang plant due to part shortages from Japanese suppliers.

March sales numbers are in and with a gain of 31%, the Chrysler Group leads the US auto industry in terms of year over year sales growth among major automotive groups.

Once upon a time, new car debuts were held at auto shows media days previews in front of auto writers and news reporters. Not now, not with the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle--or as VW is calling it, the 21st Century Beetle--which will begin with a linkup to MTV in a global series of events on three continents and include live performances by the Black Eyed Peas and 2manydjs, with the New York event streamed live on the internet on April 18th.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) stock traders viewed March as a successful quarter for GM in the United States, as retail sales surged 38 percent for its four brands, driven by demand for Chevrolet’s all-new Cruze compact sedan. The stock surged Friday to $32.41 after testing the $30 level for several weeks.

Toyota won an "unintended acceleration" case in New York against an emergency-room doctor who claimed that his 2005 Scion tC "suddenly and without warning accelerated", not stopping until it hit a tree. Toyota countered that Dr. Amir Sitafalwalla stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

U.S. Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven Chu, will launch Earth Week in the nation’s Capitol as the electric drive industry highlights advances in electric drive systems on April 19. A motorcade of battery, hybrid and fuel cell powered vehicles will proceed through Washington D.C. as part of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) conference.

The Pontiac, Mich., Stamping Plant will get $30 million in new equipment to help make sheet metal for the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic that will be built at the nearby General Motors Orion Assembly Plant. Pontiac also will make stampings for use in the Buick Verano that goes into production later this year.

General Motors’ innovative Voltec drivetrain combines emission-free electric driving with a range extending gasoline generator to give driver’s the best of the electric and hybrid worlds, with the technology making its debut in the Chevy Volt followed by the European Opel Ampera and according to Bloomberg, Buick could be the next GM brand to offer a car with the Voltec drivetrain.

Last week, American Honda recalled over 33,000 2011 Odyssey minivans for a problem with the windshield wiper controls and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda has now issued another recall for the 2011 Odyssey minivans – this time for a problem with the power front window assemblies.
