Electric Vehicle News and Reviews

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way in a short time. Barely a decade has passed since the ambitious Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors introduced the world to an electric car capable of traveling more than 300 miles on a single charge. Since then, Elon Musk and Tesla have convinced many dubious onlookers that electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but that they can become the future of transportation.

Other automakers have joined the EV movement at very different rates. The Nissan Leaf, for example, debuted in 2010 and went on to become the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the world for a time. Competition from the BMW i3 followed, as well as the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt and its all-electric successor the Chevy Bolt EV, but only the Tesla Model 3 has been able to steal the Leaf's crown. Heading into a new decade, electric vehicles are set to go from strength-to-strength, with new models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV competing in the entry-level category and the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan, or Jaguar I-PACE vying with Tesla at the top end of the market.

With entire classes of vehicle still lacking an electric version, such as pick-up trucks and affordable SUVs, there's huge potential for expansion and growth in the EV marketplace. For now, Tesla is still blazing the trail, but legacy manufacturers are lining up to electrify their fleets and promising startups like Rivian and Byton are waiting in the wings with exciting new electric vehicles.

The future is bright for EVs and you can keep up to date with all the latest stories right here on Torque News.

The other day I revisited a battery only driving range test in my 2022 Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This time through the test, I drove as hard as I could without forcing the Sorento out of its battery-only EV mode and compared my range to my previous test in which I drove as gently as possible to try and achieve maximum EV range.

Tesla began selling the refreshed Model Y with 4680 cells and a structural battery pack at the Giga Texas opening event. The vehicle was a bit of a head scratcher for the Tesla community as it has worse range & performance than the 2170 Model Y Long Range. However, now we learned that Tesla is offering an acceleration boost for the refreshed Model Y through an over-the-air update.

Recently Telsa increased the prices of its vehicles. However, this only seems to drive up demand even more. Following the recent price hikes, wait times for some Tesla variants like the Model Y have gotten even longer.

Tesla's Giga Berlin achieves production milestone of 1,000 vehicles per week, equaling about 52,000 vehicles per year. Not bad for just being up and running for a couple months. I predict by the end of the year, Giga Berlin will be at 5,000 vehicles per week.

Earlier this week, Kia announced small price increases on two of its non-electrified models for the 2023 model year in the U.S. market, the Seltos subcompact SUV and Carnival minivan. These price increases are all less than $1,000, due to inflation and increased shipping costs, and don’t necessarily affect all trim levels of these models. But it begs the question: Will Kia be raising prices on its other models soon too?

The GMC Hummer EV pickup has rapidly become one of the most important launches that the brand has ever done. The all-electric super truck can go just about anywhere and coddle drivers in luxury. It's also very expensive with prices going over $100,000 in certain models. Recent changes in the broader production web though have forced GMC to raise prices for the entire lineup.

Conspicuously, Bloomberg Intelligence has completely ignored one of the largest and fastest growing electric vehicle (EV) producers in the world in its recent business intelligence piece on global battery-electric vehicles sales. More accurately, I should say they ignored two of the largest and fastest growing companies, Kia and Hyundai, which are so closely tied we can justifiably consider them as one company.

It goes without saying that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is a popular vehicle. Indeed, the order bank for Ford's first electric was shut for a long time as the number of orders exceeded the automaker's ability to produce them. Now, dealers have been told to fix any Mach-Es before they are delivered and any others on their lot because of a high-voltage electrical problem.

The United States is the second most important EV market in the world, mainly thanks to the State of California; being one of the 50 states in the union, it certainly seems like a different country when it comes to electric cars, but one thing is clear: Tesla clearly dominates electric car sales in all 50 states, and one model especially stands out from the SX3Y quartet, the Model Y.

I was scrolling through social media, reading about people’s experience with battery-only range in their Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrids (PHEV), as well as other PHEVS like the Chevy Volt, Kia Niro, and Rav 4 Prime. And then I realized, I have yet to do a test where I see just how far I can go on a full charge, intentionally trying to maximize every mile I can get.

Tesla started refreshed 4680 Model Y deliveries at the Giga Texas opening event. However, initial deliveries were limited to Tesla employees. Later, Tesla widened the pool of individuals that could get the new vehicle to Austin, then the entire state of Texas. Now, Tesla has begun inviting Model Y reservation holders outside Texas to get the refreshed version of the all-electric crossover.

In the past 6 months, bitcoin is down 67% with 16% of the fall coming in the past 48 hours. And as the cryptocurrency has gone lower, Tesla is down 32% in its bitcoin holdings. This coupled with production disruption in Giga Shanghai is making it increasingly likely Tesla will post a quarterly loss in Q2.
