General Motors

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a linchpin of the U.S. automotive industry, selling millions of vehicles every year - 8.3 million in 2018, to be precise – and employing more than 170,000 workers. More familiarly known as GM, the auto company counts iconic brands Buick and Cadillac under its corporate umbrella, as well the more utilitarian GMC brand and the budget-conscious Chevrolet badge.

Formed in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, General Motors has a long history with the Great Lakes State. Alongside the Ford Motor Company, GM’s presence in the region and its creation of popular cars under various brands are some of the main reasons that Detroit is so widely known as Motor City. GM is a Fortune 500 company and frequently appears in the top 25 of that list as one of the largest U.S. corporations by revenue.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt comfortably outsold the 2011 Nissan Leaf in the US through the first three months of the 2011 calendar year but even with April bringing about all sorts of production stoppages for Nissan, the all-electric Leaf beat out the extended range Volt sedan in April 2011 sales.

The government is demonstrating its willingness to get behind green sources of energy by adding the first solar-powered charging station to the Government Services Administration schedule. That allows it to be purchased by federal agencies for use.

Market Close Update: Even before the April sales report, General Motors (NYSE: GM) stock gapped higher on the open. While the stock intraday found support at 32.82, it managed to trade even higher, closing near its original IPO offering price of $33.

Saab has seen its Trollhattan, Sweden production facility shuttered for most of April due to inability to pay suppliers for the components needed to produce vehicles and with the parent company Spyker desperate for funding, the company is looking to Russian investor Vladimir Antonov along with a variety of Chinese automakers to save the Saab brand.
