This morning we brought you the news of the incredible new Ram Rebel TRX Concept, featuring the supercharged 6.2L Hellcat Hemi and while the collection of high resolution images didn’t include engine bay pictures – we have acquired a set of shots showing the Hellcat Hemi nestled into the engine bay of the gorgeous Ram 1500 concept.
When I first read the press release for the Ram Rebel TRX Concept, I saw that it was powered by a supercharged 6.2L Hemi with 575 horsepower, but they didn’t use the word “Hellcat” anywhere in the announcement. I looked through the pictures and didn’t see a picture of the engine, so I watched the TRX Concept release video and, sure enough, I saw the supercharger lid of the Hellcat Hemi.
Perhaps FCA is keeping the Hellcat name unique to the Dodge brand, but there is no question that the engine under the unique hood of the Ram Rebel TRX Concept is most definitely the same engine that motivates the Dodge Challenger and Charger in their SRT Hellcat forms.
In this morning’s report, I used a screen grab from the Ram Rebel TRX Concept launch video, but I have now gotten four pictures of the Hellcat Hemi in this awesome new concept truck…and here they are!
As you can see in the images here, the Hellcat Hemi in the new Ram Rebel TRX Concept looks very similar to the one which powers the Dodge cars, but the Ram’s supercharged engine has some unique features.
First and foremost, the injector covers of the Dodge Hellcat Hemi read “Supercharged Hemi” on both sides of the engine and the supercharger cover has the SRT logo with the Hellcat head logo, both in silver. The Ram Rebel TRX has a TRX logo on the supercharger lid and the injector covers read “6.2L” in silver and “Supercharged” in red.
Next, and most significantly, the Hellcat Hemi in the Rebel TRX Concept has an elaborate air intake setup which is fed via the scoop integrated into the upper grille. The Hellcat Hemi sits much lower in the engine bay of the Ram Rebel than in the Challenger or Charger, so the throttle body is much further the cold air source in the grille. This means that while the Challenger or Charger just have a short stretch of piping between the throttle body and the air filter, the Ram’s air intake setup is quite a bit longer, as you can see in the image below. There is a thick pipe coming from the throttle body and bending up to the Ram branded air box, where it pulls cold air through the unique grille.
Some might suggest that the air intake setup could have been shortened up to avoid that added airflow restriction, but keep in mind, the Ram Rebel TRX Concept is meant to be an off-road monster. Locating the air intake below the front end or anywhere lower in the engine bay would become a serious problem when you hit any mud or water.
So, while we are likely to see high resolution pictures of the Hellcat Hemi in the engine bay of the Ram Rebel TRX Concept, enjoy these first pictures of the uniquely badged engine in the awesome concept truck.
While the engine is the key feature, this new Ram truck is far more than just an engine swap, so click here for a look at all of the features that make the Rebel TRX Concept so incredible.
