The configurator page for the 2016 Ford Mustang is live and while there are some additions and some deletions compared to the 2015 model year, the most surprising aspect is that there appears to be no price increases anywhere in the 2016 model year Mustang lineup.
Yesterday, we brought you the news that the 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special had shown up with full details and pricing on Ford.com. I was so eager to cover that new trim package that I didn’t take the time to look at the detailed pricing for the 2016 model year Mustang, but once I had the time to pick through the pages of Ford.com, I was surprised to see that all of the prices from the 2015 Mustang appear to be carried over to 2016 without any price increases anywhere in the configurator tool.
From the base prices of the fastback and convertible to the cost of preferred equipment packages and standalone options, Ford has held steady on Mustang pricing from 2015 to 2016.
2016 Ford Mustang Pricing
As was the case for the 2015 model year, the 2016 Ford Mustang in its base V6 fastback form with a 6-speed manual transmission starts at $23,800. Stepping up to the EcoBoost model raises the price to $25,300 and the EcoBoost Premium starts at $29,300. The 2016 Mustang GT fastback starts at $32,300 with the 435hp V8 and the 6-speed manual transmission and for those who want more gadgets, the Mustang GT Premium starts at $36,300.
The 2016 Ford Mustang Convertible in V6 base form still starts at $29,300, with the EcoBoost Premium starting at $34,800 and the 2016 Mustang GT Premium convertible starts at $41,800.
Regardless of the engine or body style chosen, the 6-speed automatic transmission still costs $1,195 while preferred equipment groups like the EcoBoost Mustang’s 201A or the Mustang GT’s 401A remain at $1,795 for the new model year. Triple Yellow still costs $495 extra, Ruby Red still costs $395 extra, the EcoBoost Performance Package still adds $1,995 and the GT Performance Package still costs $2,495.
2016 Model Year Changes
So far, changes to the 2016 model year Ford Mustang are fairly limited. Exterior colors are all the same, many of the option packages are the same and many of the standalone options are the same as 2015. However, there are some changes for the 2016 Mustang, including the California Special package and a new Black Accent Package for the Mustang GT, as well as a Black Painted Roof option that is available on EcoBoost and GT models.
2016 Shelby Arrives
The biggest change in the 2016 Ford Mustang configurator is, of course, the addition of the new Shelby GT350 packages. Offered only as a fastback, the GT350 starts at $47,795 while the GT350R starts at $61,295. For the GT350, there is a $7,500 Technology Package, a $6,500 Track Package, the Black Painted Roof and a collection of optional stripes. For the GT350R, there are some stripe packages and the $3,000 Electronics package, but neither of the new Shelby cars are designed to be loaded to the gills – they are designed to go very, very fast.
The decision to keep prices the same for the 2016 Mustang should prove to be a good move by Ford, as any price increase may help the 2016 Camaro, which is set to arrive soon. Should the next generation Camaro cost more than the current, outgoing models, it could give the 2016 Mustang a defined advantage in the muscle car sales battle.
