Porsche recalls 2011 and 2012 models over seatbelt failures

We are living in the day of the recall and not even the worlds most expensive and exclusive models are not safe from the recall bug as the folks at Porsche have announced a recall for a variety of 2011 and 2012 models over a concern of possible seatbelt failures.

This new Porsche seatbelt recall affects a wide range of 2011 and 2012 Boxter, Cayman and 911 models built between May 31, 2011 through June 10, 2011. The full list of vehicles affect is found below. Luckily, since the time period of the affected models is so brief, only 235 vehicles are included in this recall but considering the nature of the recall and the way that Porsche owners drive their cars (or more realistically, the way that they are made to be driven) this could prove to be a pretty serious problem.

In the 235 2011 and 2012 Porsche models included in this new seatbelt recall, there is a chance that the seatbelt mounting plate holes are too small. If the holes were indeed drilled too small, the seatbelt assembly may be unable to rotate around the bolt as intended and in the event of an accident – the seatbelts may not function as intended. This obviously increases the risks of injury during an accident but in the worst case scenario, the seatbelt mounting plate screws could work loose and come free of the floor which would render the seatbelts useless in the event of an accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration makes no mention of accidents, injuries or deaths stemming from this seatbelt recall issue but the luxury performance automaker is still recalling the 235 models for inspection. Once back at the dealership, a Porsche certified technician will inspect the seatbelt mounting plate, the securing screws and the mounting hole to ensure proper fitment – making any changes to the assembly if a problem is found. All of this work will be performed free of charge to the owners.
