First Porsche was out with a special Black 911 Carrera and Boxster S and now Cadillac has announced its foray into special black models with the CTS V Black Diamond.
What makes this foray into special black models interesting is Cadillac isn’t just slapping a flat black paint job on the CTS-V and charging a few extra bucks. Well, you're going to pay more, but this will be the first use by an automaker of JDSU’s proprietary SpectraFlair pigment in North America.
In the CTS-V Black Diamond edition, a dark tri-coat paint gets imbued with a silver pigment for what Cadillac says is an added dimension. It uses aluminum flakes encased in magnesium fluoride for paint that has “a diamond-like sparkle as light hits the surface from different angles,” as GM puts it in typical hyperbole.
What’s really exciting is the Black Diamond CTS-V is available on any of the Cadillac CTS-Vs, including the station wagon. The Toyota Sienna is no longer the swagger wagon. That honor henceforth is bestowed upon the CTS-V wagon.
The CTS-V Black Diamond comes with a suggested retail price, including destination charges, of $69,190 for the manual or $70,490 for the automatic, a $4,850 premium over the CTS-V base price. Seems a little steep for a paint job, but the CTS-V Black Diamond also comes with graphite 19-inch wheels with yellow Brembo brake calipers (but how cool would purple have been?); Recaro seats that adjust 14 ways and have microfiber suede – so no kids allowed; and a special midnight Sapele wood trim that Cadillac says is known for durability, which begs the question – is the regular trim not?
