With the last remaining Chevrolet Bolts quickly being purchased from dealers, Chevrolet is close to being out of the personal EV business - temporarily.
This week, our friend, reader, colleague, and fellow GM fan, Tom McColl, tipped us off that there is a public website set up by GM that one can use to see where vehicles are in stock. In early January, Mr. McColl set the search tool to the geographic center of the U.S. and looked up how many Chevy Bolts remained unsold. The answer was about 5,000. Today, the answer is just 3,858 remaining. We reached out to our GM contacts and asked if this is the best available information. GM declined to comment on inventory levels.
Our readers will likely know that GM has decided to sunset the Bolt and Bolt EUV, and that production ended in December. The only Bolts and Bolt EUVs one can buy are those that have been made and are either at dealers now or in transit from GM’s storage. What our readers may not know is that Chevrolet doesn’t presently sell a battery-electric vehicle to private owners other than the Bolts. So, once these Bolts are finally sold off, Chevrolet will no longer be a company that sells BEVs to private owners.
We specify private owners because Chevrolet is selling a small number of Silverado EVs on its commercial side. However, the Silverado EV, Equinox EV, and Blazer EV are not being sold to private buyers at this time for personal use. The Equinox has not yet launched, and the Blazer EV was pulled from the market so that some early production issues could be dealt with.
Both Mr. McColl and Torque News are fans of Chevrolet EVs. Your author named the Bolt EUV the Best EV Overall for 2023 at Car Talk. Mr. McColl is a frequent contributor to Chevrolet Bolt forums such as the Facebook Chevy Bolt EV and EUV Owners Group.
Our research indicates that some of the Bolts shown in stock are either sold or in transit. However, Bolts are still being purchased by owners on a daily basis. If you have your eye on a Bolt or Bolt EUV do not hesitate. Your window of opportunity to buy a new one is rapidly closing.
Chevrolet has indicated that the Bolt may return later as a new generation product, perhaps with an Ultium battery. If that comes to pass, we will eagerly report the good news.

If you want to buy a BOLT EV/EUV there are hundreds if not thousands 2020/21 lease returns available on car lots. Many with under 20,000 miles selling for around $16-22,000. And with the Fed Used Car Tax Credit..it drops the price $4,000. And why produce need models when there are so many lightly used ones available.

I agree that GM has problems…
I agree that GM has problems from choosing to (temporarily) kill off the Chevy Bolt, and delay the release of the Equinox EV, Silverado EV, and Blazer EVs. They say that they will be shipping the Equinox EV within a few months, but there has been no formal release day announced, and importantly the Equinox EV will initially sell in only the Launch Edition trim for close to $50K! Which is more than the dual motor/AWD Tesla Model Y, before rebates.

Far more children have been injured and killed by air pollution than will ever be affected by warlord controlled mining. The majority of EVs in the world use no cobalt, and new refining facilities like the new Salton Sea plant in California integrate a geothermal power plant with lithium production will cleanly provide the lithium needed for over 400K EVs per year.
