We run down the list of American-market electric vehicles that offer you a spare tire. The list is surprisingly long.
As automakers transition to dramatically heavier electric vehicles, the myth that automakers needed to save a few pounds by eliminating your spare tire has become accepted by many gullible consumers as fact. No Tesla model has a spare tire, nor do they come with a spare tire storage area. Hyundai’s new Ioniq 5, Kia’s EV6, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Volkswagen ID.4, and even the six-figure Lucid Air all leave you stranded if your tire is damaged and cannot be re-inflated on the road. Your only option is to see your pricey new EV towed away. However, many EV models do have spare tires. And the list is getting longer as new models emerge.

In our listing, we will include both plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs) and also battery electric vehicles (BEVs). If that upsets you for some reason, feel free to state your objection in our comments section. By our way of thinking, any vehicle that plugs in and can get you to and from work without using any gas is an EV.
Some of the electric vehicles on the market offer spare tires as an option or by trim. We will do our level best to specify which is which, but always check with your dealer or direct-market retailer on the status of a spare tire before you place an order. Also, some markets outside of the U.S. may steal the spare even on the models we list here.
Most Insane Electric Vehicle Spare Tire Option - GMC Hummer EV The GMC Hummer does not come standard with any spare. However, GMC will sell you an optional Bed-Mounted Vertical Tire Carrier that can hold up to two matching wheels. Sure, you lose your cargo area, but with two full-size matching spare tires, we must give a tip of the hat to the Hummer pickup.
Won’t My Mobility Kit Save Me? We have no problem with tire mobility kits. In fact, they make sense even if you have a spare tire. But are they really a substitute for a spare? Tire mobility kits, a.k.a. gunk in the trunk, can help to get you going if you have a simple puncture, you are able to use the mobility kit successfully, and if you are near help. However, many owners who use mobility kits also fail to use them successfully. Many users report that the mobility kit’s slime killed their TPMS sensor. So, while they are certainly better than nothing, tire mobility kits are not a solution to all types of tire damage. Consider this scenario; You are in a snowstorm, and you have damaged a tire by hitting a monster pothole. That tire is now flat. You have phoned roadside assistance. Would you rather know you have a spare tire in the trunk the technician can mount upon arrival, or would you prefer to have a frozen-solid mobility kit in the trunk?
Help Us Help EV Shoppers Our list may not be complete, and over time we hope more EVs will enter the marketplace with spare tires. If you know of an EV with a spare tire that we have left out, please tell us in the comments below about it. We will update our list periodically so electric vehicle shoppers who value a spare tire can make an informed decision. 8-19-22 - List updated to Include Hyundai Santa Fe HTRAC PHEV.

My 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV came
My 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV came with a compact spare tire (it is mounted underneath the rear of tge vehicle). I believe it is standard on all the Sorento PHEVs in the U.S.

Add 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid
Add 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid to the no spare list. Had to be towed to the dealership all because of a flat tire. Instead of a spare tire underneath the cargo bay in the perfectly round space, I found a damn battery... Nice design Ford! Hybrids are heavy and demand a LOT from the tires - this could be a major issue not providing a spare tire, imho.
What kind of a clueless car
What kind of a clueless car owner are you that you did not know there was no spare tire until the day you needed it.. Do you know where your emergency lights or hood latch are? LOL. I make sure to know where everything is if I am going to be driving a vehicle for the day.
How many car buyers remember
How many car buyers remember to ask about a spare tire ?
Either because it is a long way down the list of purchasing factors....
....or more likely, assume a spare is there.
I know folks - not frequent car replacers - who have never known "no spare tire" - so it wouldn't occur to ask.
IMO, it should be made compulsory for Salesmen to tell buyers about spare or no spare.
Then an informed decision can be made....
...and car-makers get the feedback.
Interesting but many of the
Interesting but many of the cars listed are not electric vehicles. Many are weak hybrids. The RAV 4 Prime is a PHEV. The real Toyota electric is next year...the BX4X. Most of these are primarily gas vehicles.
I think I understand your
I think I understand your comment Bob, You are one of the BEV fans who don't like to include plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles in any content around EVs, but every vehicle on this list is an electric vehicle. The chart has a column that describes what type of electric vehicle it is. Battery-electric or plug-in hybrid-electric.
...and those of us who are…
...and those of us who are concerned about range limits of purely electric vehicles appreciate the column of information about PHEV vs. BEV. My wife just went shopping for a car this week, and learned about the failure of many 'electric' vehicles to supply a spare or run-flat tires in lieu of a spare.
Within the past month, we were on holiday in Europe using a PHEV Mercedes loaned to us, and we were almost stranded by a tire encountering a road hazard that left the tire flat on a Sunday afternoon...only someone in the nighborhood with ability to patch the tire got us back on the road rather than stranded over night. Stupid car manufacturers rely on gunk-in-trunk that does not work for all flats.
I have been looking for a…
I have been looking for a compact hybrid SUV. Seems Toyota s RAV4 is the only one with a spare tire, although compact. I am NOT planning to buy an automobile without a spare. The non spare SUV's seem to be selling fine.
We love our EV Honda Accord…
We love our EV Honda Accord... but this "no spare" is just the thing that might have us looking elsewhere! We buy good high end tires, yet being without a spare is just not smart. Towed today, again because the fix flat type stuff didn't work again.
The Rivian R1S has an …
The Rivian R1S has an "inflatable" compact spare. Challenge is that the full size flat does not fit back into the tire well after mounting the spare. Not a good idea to pack a dirty tire coated in brake dust within a loaded cabin of personal items and people.
Keep up the good work.
