Mecum Auctions will sell Steve McQueen’s last, special Porsche.
Steve McQueen may be more famous for the Bullitt Mustang, but during the peak of his career he ordered a special 1976 Porsche 930 Carrera as a treat to himself. The car was ordered with a custom Slate Gray paint. After three years of ownership, the car went back to the Porsche dealer who originally ordered if to McQueen. Since then it has had a short list of famous owners and has always been a Southern California car.
McQueen’s son Chad has fond memories of stealing the car and evading his nanny to make stealthy runs around the neighborhood. Chad recounted to Mecum, “I was 15 at the time, and he was out of town for a week. Every day, sometimes twice in the same day, I’d open the garage, turn the key, give the car a stealthy roll down to the cul-de-sac, fire it up and take off.”
The car has been only slightly modified. Chad says McQueen added a switch so he could shut off the taillights in case he was chased. McQueen also added one-inch-wider wheels. Aside from that, the car is stock. The 3.0-liter engine made 234 hp when new and has fuel injection and also a limited slip rear differential. The car was also ordered by McQueen with a sunroof and black sport seats.
The Mecum auction takes place in Monterey from August 13 through 15th. For more information visit the Mecum page for the vehicle.
