Check out the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid compact SUVs for 2021 and 2022 model year vehicles. The 2022 Subaru Forester and 2021 Subaru Crosstrek score number one and two best.
With gas prices going up and averaging well over $3.00 per gallon and more than $4.00 in some states, car shoppers are looking for a fuel-efficient SUV. Consumer Reports recently ranked small SUVs and found the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Subaru Forester rank number one and two best non-hybrid models.
If having an all-wheel-drive vehicle is essential, the Subaru Forester and Crosstrek come standard with a Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.
Having an SUV with all-wheel-drive usually means you sacrifice fuel economy, but it’s not valid with the Forester and Crosstrek. Subaru uses direct injection on its four-cylinder Boxer engines for efficiency. The automaker also uses a Continuously Variable automatic Transmission (CVT), contributing to improved fuel mileage.
