The 3 Millionth Subaru Outback Sold In America And The Best Is Down The Road

Subaru of America announced it has sold its three-millionth Outback midsize SUV. But that’s not the whole story. New car shoppers need to know more.

Subaru of America (SOA) announced it had sold its three-millionth Subaru Outback midsize SUV/Crossover/Wagon. We applaud the company for giving customers one of its best-selling all-wheel-drive vehicles

The Outback Has Longevity

Since 1995, it has been a popular model in America. That’s about 105,000 Outback models sold per year and 8,750 per month to U.S. customers. This proves that if you stick around long enough, you’ll eventually hit the target. But the Outback is not slowing down. Check my recent report here.

Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales at Subaru of America, says, “The Subaru Outback put Subaru on the map in the United States and continues to be a sales leader today. Led by the Outback as our top seller this month, we have achieved 22 consecutive months of yearly month-over-month sales growth in the United States. The Outback remains a key driver of that success.”

An Unlikely Buyer

You’d think the 3-millionth Outback would have been purchased in Seattle, Washington; Beaverton, Oregon; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Manchester, New Hampshire; or Danbury, Connecticut. These cities and states have the largest sales volume dealers in the country.

However, it was purchased at Subaru of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. Florida is a warm-weather state where Subaru is not known for its outdoor adventures. You can take it to the beach, but where are the rugged trails?

SOA says the Outback was sold to David Jett, a four-time Subaru owner. So this customer knows his Subarus.

Phil Porter Jr., General Manager, Subaru of Jacksonville, said, “We were excited and honored to sell the three-millionth Subaru Outback in America to our long-time customer, David Jett. It’s a testament to our customers’ brand loyalty and the enduring appeal of a vehicle that truly embodies adventure, reliability, and safety!”

It’s A Great Story, But There’s More

Here’s a little history. Subaru created a niche market with the SUV-alternative Outback and is doing what no other automaker has been able to accomplish. Read my Outback success story here

Whether or not the Outback is an SUV, crossover, or Wagon is up to debate, but you could call the Subaru Outback a lifted wagon with a “go-anywhere” attitude. The Camden, N.J. automaker continues to have unbelievable success with it.

Subaru says, “The 2024 Outback delivers the optimal blend of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling while maintaining a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry.”

Outback Outsells Many Top SUVs

It may surprise you that the Subaru Outback outsells these ten popular SUVs:

  • Ford Escape
  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Honda Pilot
  • Toyota Highlander
  • Ford Bronco
  • Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Kia Telluride
  • Hyundai Palisade
  • Ford Edge
  • Mazda CX-5

Ok, So Outback Is A Hot Pick

The SUV-alternative Outback is an incredible success story because it defies the odds. It has Subaru’s excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and all-weather and all-terrain performance.

Subaru says, “The Outback became a cultural icon synonymous with outdoor adventure.”

Enter The Outback Wilderness

The Outback improved with the all-new rugged outdoor-themed Outback Wilderness. It’s the hottest new Outback trim level for SOA. Read my Outback Wilderness report here

What’s New For 2025?

Nothing is new for the 2025 Outback model year. But if you stick around another year, it all changes.

The Best Is Down The Road

For the 2026 Subaru Outback, the midsize SUV gets a complete redesign. That means some new exterior upgrades, but they won’t be drastic. The most significant changes will be in the safety technology driving dynamics, cabin quietness, and ride quality.

How do I know? Subaru of America has not released any information on the new next-generation Outback. I’m getting my information from the 2025 Subaru Forester compact SUV, which recently received a complete remodel.

Subaru Is Consistent

Subaru has few surprises when it comes to its SUV changes. The upgrades are thoughtful and calculated. One thing you can count on is Subaru will attempt to make life easier for the next-generation Outback customer. There will be more comfort and convenience features on the inside.

Wait, There’s More

Would you be interested in the next-generation Outback Hybrid? Subaru has not announced or confirmed this new Outback trim level, but it’s very likely that the Outback will get a hybrid powertrain.

From what I’ve seen from Subaru, it will arrive in late 2026 or early 2027 after the regular models make their dealer launch. The question still remains whether it will be a regular hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid technology. You can read my report on the differences between the two here.

Here are a few details if you are shopping for the 2025 Outback and don’t want to wait for the new next-gen 2026 models.

For the 2025 model year, the Outback is available in Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited, Touring, and XT trim levels. You can read my complete 2025 Outback report here.

What Is The 2025 Outback Pricing?

The Base is priced at $30,290, Premium ($32,590), Onyx Edition ($37,500), Limited ($39,250), Touring ($41,740), Onyx Edition XT ($40,755), Wilderness ($41,355), Limited XT ($41,590), and Touring XT ($44,190). Destination and delivery fees increased by $100 and are included in the price above ($1,395).

How much did the 2025 Outback price increase?

Only one trim level increased in price. The Outback Limited increased +$2,160. A power moonroof, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, navigation, and a 360-degree heated steering wheel are now standard on Limited trims.

That’s the latest information on the 2024-2026 Subaru Outback.

I am most interested in an Outback plug In Hybrid. But…it needs to keep the current towing capacity….3500 pounds. Love my 2024 Outback. Turbo four allows me to pull my just under 2000 boat. Several vehicles that had a 3500 towing capacity reduced the towing capacity as a hybrid, or used the smaller horsepower motor

I like to claim that I started the ball rolling. (just joking.)

I bought a new 1990 Subaru LS+ (something or other — I can’t remember the exact name) and asked the dealer to add leather upholstery. The sales people looked at me like I was nuts. But I told them that they were underselling their car. That model was really terrific… It had the hydraulic shocks and lots of other great stuff. For me the most important part was the all-wheel-drive, for skiing.

Anyway, I’m sure such feedback eventually got to the factory and recognized that they had a hidden gem and re-badged it as an Outback.

I am definitely interested in an Outback hybrid. I currently own a 2020 Limited Outback.(my second one) & absolutely love this vehicle. I considered a Toyota hybrid RAV4 but settled on another Outback because I knew I would be happy with it, & I wasn’t sure I would be happy with the RAV4. So an Outback hybrid would definitely be a top choice for me.
