Subaru says they have advanced its safety tech further to have zero fatal accidents. Can they reach the goal by 2030? See how it could happen.
Can Subaru have zero fatal accidents with its next-generation vehicles? Yes, says Subaru Corporation. They say they will accomplish the goal by 2030. Here’s how they will do it.
I’ve covered Subaru’s safety tech and how they will have zero fatal accidents by 2030 four years ago. Now, Subaru says they have moved close to that goal. Here’s how and why AMD believes they can do it.
A New Partnership With AMD
Subaru Corporation announced a new collaboration with AMD, a Santa Clara, California company, to design circuits for a system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates stereo camera recognition processing with AI inference, enabling optimal decisions.
Subaru says, “We have partnered with AMD to design circuits for an optimized SoC based on the recently launched AMD Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 adaptive SoC to achieve cutting-edge AI inference performance and ultra-low latency processing at a low cost.”
The Next-Gen Eyesight
“With this optimized SoC, Subaru will further enhance the recognition processing capabilities of stereo cameras it has cultivated over the years. It aims to incorporate this new technology into its next-generation EyeSight system in the second half of the 2020s.”
The Next-Generation Outback Could Be First
I’ve covered the next-generation Outback, and the midsize SUV could be the first model to get the new technology. The all-new, remodeled 2026 Outback midsize SUV should make its U.S. launch in late 2025. That’s just in time to get the new EyeSight X.
Here Is What’s Coming Soon
As I’ve reported recently, Subaru is testing its new next-generation EyeSight X driver assist safety technology, which will be more hands-off for the driver. Are you ready for this?
Subaru is moving closer to fully autonomous driving.
Subaru says, “During your lunch break, taking your hands off the steering wheel is possible if certain conditions are met. The temporary driving load will be drastically reduced.” Does Subaru mean you can eat while driving? It sounds a little scary to me, but it may be coming sooner than we think.
What Is Zero Fatal Accidents?
This means that Subaru will have zero fatal road accidents among its occupants and people involved in collisions with Subaru vehicles, including pedestrians and cyclists. I’ll review how Subaru got here.
Subaru’s Advanced Safety Tech History
The big technological jump, started in 2016 when Subaru and IBM partnered on a data analytics system for testing images from the advanced safety system, including output from Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system. The safety system was standard equipment on all 2020 Subaru Forester, Outback, Ascent vehicles, and Crosstrek models with the CVT automatic transmission.
For the past eight years, Subaru and IBM have been testing images from the advanced safety system, including output from Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system. Using vast amounts of test image data already gathered by Subaru, the goal is to improve development efficiency, which will significantly contribute to the attainment of advanced driver assistance, leading to zero fatal accidents.
Subaru says, “We are committed to developing vehicles based on its comprehensive “all-around” safety philosophy, which includes “preventive safety,” exemplified by its EyeSight driver assist technology, as well as “primary safety,” “active safety,” “passive safety,” and “connected safety.” Subaru will continue to enhance safety in each of these areas to achieve its goal of “zero fatal road accidents in 2030.”
