Should you buy the Crosstrek Wilderness or the Outback Wilderness? Philip, a seasoned Subaru owner who has owned three Subaru vehicles, wrote to Subaru of America and told them he had traded in his Crosstrek and bought an Outback.
Philip's extensive experience with Subaru vehicles gives his opinion weight. He says he couldn't be happier with his decision.
Philip traded in a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited trim level and bought a rugged 2024 Outback Wilderness. Why didn't he buy the all-new Crosstrek Wilderness? That's what I'll explain in this report.
First, Let's find out what Philip says about his new 2024 Outback Wilderness and his story about what he thinks of the Subaru brand and culture.
Philip says, "I just wanted to take a moment to share how much I appreciate the brand and the cars you make. I recently traded in my 2019 Crosstrek Limited for a 2024 Outback Wilderness—which makes my third Subaru—and I couldn't be happier with the decision."
"The Outback is everything I hoped for. It's rugged, comfortable, and ready for the adventures I love."
Philip does not say why he traded his Crosstrek Limited for the Outback Wilderness, but he could have chosen the new Crosstrek Wilderness. I'll explain the differences between the two outdoor-themed models, but first, let's hear more from Philip.
The Outback Wilderness is Philip's third Subaru. He says, "My 3rd Subie!"
Philip says, "I still have my 2017 STI, which holds a special place in my heart. After having to rebuild the engine with an IAG 550 short block, it's stronger than ever, and I'm planning to keep it for as long as possible as it's the last of its kind."

Philip could have also tackled the trails in a Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness and had a great time, but he chose the Outback Wilderness. Let's take a look at both and find out why.
Crosstrek Wilderness Vs. Outback Wilderness
Which Outdoor-themed Wilderness model is the best, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness or the 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness? I see three significant upgrades that set one apart and how Philip likely made his decision.
The Outback is larger than the Crosstrek. However, it's not just the size difference; I have found three upgrades that set the Outback Wilderness apart. Philip probably checked them out when he decided which one to buy.
Ground clearance.
The Outback Wilderness will handle more challenging trails with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, a nearly one-inch increase over the standard model's 8.7 inches. The Crosstrek Wilderness is close to the Outback, with 9.3 inches of rock-clearing ground clearance. Advantage Outback Wilderness.
A significant difference is in the powertrains.
A significant difference between Outback Wilderness and Crosstrek Wilderness trims is their engines. Outback Wilderness is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.
The Crosstrek Wilderness gets the re-tuned 2.5-liter normally-aspirated Boxer engine, producing 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The Outback has a distinct advantage when going over a steep mountain pass if you carry additional cargo or friends.
Do you want a heated steering wheel?
If you want a 360-degree heated steering wheel, buy the 2024 Outback Wilderness. The outdoor-themed Crosstrek Wilderness trim does not offer a heated steering wheel option.
The 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness and Crosstrek trim levels are capable all-terrain vehicles for getting further off the grid. The 2024 Outback Wilderness offers more power, additional ground clearance, and a heated steering wheel.
