I’ve Owned Toyotas For 30 Years With No Issues, I Took A Chance On a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, and 5K Miles In, the Problems Begin

2024 Chevrolet Silverado

Should you buy a Chevrolet Silverado? Many owners report no problems with the truck, while others report significant issues. Here is Phil's unfortunate story of his 2024 Silverado 2.7-liter TurboMax with 5K miles, which has already had multiple problems.

"In my 30 years of owning Toyotas with no issues, I took a chance with Chevrolet, and it begins."

Imagine owning Toyota vehicles for 30 years, and you buy your first Chevrolet vehicle. It's a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7-liter TurboMax. You like the look and capabilities of the new Silverado, so you pull the trigger and get it.

However, when the odometer hits 5,000 miles, the problems with the new pickup begin. That's what Phil Layton says in a Facebook post on the 2019 - 2025 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Owners Facebook page.

Phil's troubles begin at an unexpected 5,000 miles mark.

Phil says he's already had the truck, which only has 5,000 miles, at the dealer to replace the serpentine belt, and then shortly after, they also had to replace the tensioner pulley.

Then, he gets the truck home, and now the truck's check engine light comes on, and it looks like there are other problems with his brand new Silverado 1500. Here is Phil's unfortunate story.

Phil's frustration is understandable as he shares, "I was never a hater and even a skeptic about everyone that said they had issues with their Chevrolet Silverado 2.7-liter, but my day (week) finally came."

"I have a 2024 2.7 with only 5,145 miles on it. A constant chirping sound has come from the serpentine belt for the last month."

"I took it to the dealer, and they tell me "the belt is completely glazed" (with 5,000 miles on the clock), and they replace the belt."

Phil's disbelief is evident as he recounts, "I told them the truck has 5000 miles on it, and the serpentine belt should last between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. He said, 'I agree. I've been doing this job for 17 years, and I have to tell you this is a first for me; I have never seen this before, and I have never heard this happening before.'"

"In any event, he said it's ready for pick up. Before I got off the phone, I said, This is covered under warranty, correct? There's only 5000 miles on the vehicle and it's a 2024."

You can hear Phil's frustration as he recounts the dealer's response.

"He said that serpentine belts are not covered under the GM warranty as they are considered "wear and tear" items. Obviously, I came unglued on the phone and told him that if I had 50,000 or 60,000 miles on the truck and this happened, that makes sense, but 5,000 miles and you're telling me that it's not covered?"

He Had the Truck Back for A Day, and There Are More Problems

"So, the next day, the chirping sound comes back. I took it back to the dealer, and they tell me the tensioner pulley needs to be replaced, and a bearing is seizing up, and they're replacing that as well."

Next, It's the Check Engine Light

He continues, "Then, this morning, I'm heading to the gym at 5:30 am, and when I use both turn signals, they would say "check L signal" and "check R signal," but there are no codes."

Phil is connected to the myChevrolet mobile app to check the truck's Vehicle Status report on his phone.

"Then, about two hours ago, my check engine light came on on the way home from work. There is an error code, P00FF, on the Body Control Module (BCM)."

"So, I disconnected the negative battery cable to "reset" the battery, but there was no fix. My check engine light is still on. I tried a few other troubleshooting techniques, but no go. The check engine light is still on."

Phil Does Some Research

"I tried to do some research on the BCM for the 2024 2.7, and from the few posts I've seen from others, the majority seemed to go the lemon law route since it's a pain to actually narrow down and fix the "electrical issues."

"In any event, in 30 years of owning Toyotas with no issues, I took a chance with Chevrolet, and after only 5,000 miles, the problems begin."

"I'll give Chevrolet the opportunity to fix the issue, but from what I'm hearing and reading, it doesn't look promising."

It's Back to the Dealer

After returning his new truck to the Chevrolet dealer, he gets back this report from the technician who worked on his pickup.

After performing a systems testing and inspection, I found the chirping noise originates from the A/C compressor and goes away when the clutch is engaged. Repair requires A/C compressor replacement.

The check engine light is on—found code B2HA3. I performed system testing and inspection and found the park position switch sticking, causing short-to-ground on circuit 553 and the code to set. The repair requires a transmission control replacement.

After Reading This Report

Phil says,

"Has anyone heard of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) "failing" on these trucks? I can't find a single case where the TCM failed on the 2.7 Silverados."

"I'm thinking this is gonna be an electrical issue that's ultimately not gonna be able to be resolved, and it'll be a Lemon Law  buyback for me; but, curious if anyone has ever heard or seen of a TCM failure on these trucks before?"

A user on Reddit says,

"I picked up my new 2024 Silverado LT on Wednesday of last week. Friday, I was leaving my driveway and got this message, and the vehicle went into limp mode. The truck has 248 km on it. The dealer brought it in today and says the TCM is faulty and needs replacing."

What is the Chevrolet Silverado TCM?

The TCM (Transmission Control Module) is a computer that controls the automatic transmission's operation, including gear shifting and hydraulic pressure, ensuring smooth and efficient transitions.

Should Phil Pursue the Lemon Law?

Phil lives in Florida, and the Lemon Law covers "Defects or conditions that substantially impair the use, value or safety of a new vehicle (these are called "nonconformities"). These defects must be first reported to the manufacturer or its authorized service agent (usually, this is the dealer) during the "Lemon Law Rights Period," which is the first 24 months after the date of delivery of the motor vehicle to the consumer."

"If the manufacturer fails to conform the vehicle to the warranty after a "reasonable number of attempts" to repair these defects, the law requires the manufacturer to buy back the defective vehicle and give the consumer a purchase price refund or a replacement vehicle."

Phil Has to Give Chevrolet Time To Fix His Silverado

Under Florida's Lemon Law, a "reasonable number of attempts" to repair a vehicle generally means three repair attempts for the same defect or 30 days of cumulative time out of service for repairs before a vehicle is presumed to be a lemon.

Conclusion:

It's important to note that if Phil's Silverado has been back to the Chevrolet dealer for repair of the same recurring problem at least three times, he or his attorney must give written notification by certified, registered, or express mail to General Motors (not the dealer) to afford a final opportunity to repair the vehicle.

If the Chevrolet dealer cannot fix his 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7-liter TurboMax, he could be in for a long, uncomfortable ride.

I own a 2014 Silverado High Country and it was the worst decision on my life. I had to replace the fuel injectors, the ac condenser, starter 2x times, ac compressor, transmission 2x (first time at 125k miles, fan vent door actuator, and lastly but not least I had to do a stop leak in my dashboard radiator that would had cost over 2k... now, the truck is burning oil and I'm at 230k miles. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few things... the chrome rims are all corroded too... I'll never buy a chevrolet truck again... never

Way too many people want to cry lemon law when something goes wrong with their vehicle. You have a new vehicle warranty on the vehicle. It has over 15,000 parts and over 20 computers that all have to talk to each other. I do not care what manufacturer it is. Let the dealership fix it and quit crying like a baby because it broke. That is what the warranty is for!!!

Dealers don't have techs that can fix anything under warranty and the service manager is programed to have you pay out of pocket. They're all building crap now days and are money pits . You want something to last without 20 stupid computers engineered by non automotive office goofs , buy reliability from earlier models if you can find some , the folks who know have done so, have no dealer and warranty issues, wake up,,, nothing consumer friendly for the last 25 years. But maybe you like money pits and inconvenience .

This ALL is the result of corporations seeking increased profits over quality control. Cut, cut, cut and hope your cars aren’t total crap. News flash: a lot of them are crap. Stock price rise should not be the sole motivation of a company

My 2023, 1500 Silverado with 14k miles just came out of the dealership repair after waiting 8 weeks for a valve body, which includes the TCM. Same problem as above. Check engine light came on and truck wouldn't shift properly. Dealership told me it could take 3 or 4 months for that part.

Yeah, I doubt he didn't have any problems with Toyotas. They are built so poorly. I worked for a place that used trashy Toyotas for their fleet and there were problems constantly! They are beyond terrible.
That being said, Chevy builds their product to fail immediately. That's done intentionally. Toyota is just unable to do anything properly.

It could have been worse. He could have bought another Toyota - the brand he seems to dearly love. Say he bought a 2022 Tundra instead. He could have had to replace or rebuild the whole engine. That particular problem makes Chevy's nagging problems here look pretty insignificant. Many Tundra owners are out of commission for months.

As a master automotive technician for 30 years I am GM trained, I own a 2015 and 2017 Silverados and knew back then that you should NOT get the 8 spd transmission. GM has had constant issues with camshafts and lifters in the 5.3 and 6.0 and 6.2 in all of these engines. I have been replacing camshafts or/and lifters since 2012. The new 2.7 engines are known for the squeaks coming from the idler pulley bearing. The 2.7 does not have a tensioner just an idler. The only reason I still have my truck's at 127,000 miles without going into the engine is because of the range technology device I have in the data link connector that keeps the engine control module from going into four cylinder mode.

Unfortunately Chevrolet and GMC are the biggest roaches on the road. Anybody that buys that junk gets what they deserve. General motors has been nothing but problems for years and the past now and people still buy that junk. it just amazes me how stupid people really are. Unfortunately Toyota's gone down the tubes also even the new Toyota are junk. Everybody rags on Dodge Ram pickups but that's the only brand that I've ever had luck with and have done me well. I have a 2004 Ram 2500 regular cab with 320,000 miles on it. the original motor the original transmission nothing's ever been done to this truck except for brakes and oil changes and I did have to change a water pump. Besides that this Ram has been the best truck I've ever owned even better than the previous four or five Rams I've owned in the past. They've all been good but this 2004 has been an excellent truck and I would not hesitate to buy a new Ram pickup regardless of all the dumping everybody does on Dodge. I would still stick with a ram truck over any other but that's my opinion.

Congrats on 30 years no problems with Toyota. I've worked for every major manufacturer at dozens of Chicago area dealerships since 1995 and have seen the craziest things with vehicles and more now than ever with all the ridiculous tech in these vehicles- like a Jeep that refused to keep it's menus in English. Anyhow my suggestion is certainly try another store. So often what can't be sorted by one shop is figured out easily by another. While they all have access to the same info from GM it's just like going to a Dr. They all have different experience and thought processes that can aide in correcting this. Take one last shot trying a new dealer service shop while preparing to utilize lemon law, that's why it's there. It'll take some time and more frustration but ultimately you're never going to be happy with this truck even if they fix it you'll always have this entire experience in your toolbox of feelings. Move on. And it may be just this one Silverado that sucks - i currently work for a Chevy dealer and haven't heard this as a common event. Every mass production item have a few that make it into the world . I hope u resolve this and get one u r happy with

I bought a 1997 Chevy Venture van, I had more trouble with it than I care to mention. In 2000 I decided to buy a Toyota 4 Runner. I never had trouble with it. In 2006 I bought a XSP 4 Runner. I've had it for 19 yrs. Minor fixes now but runs like a Champ. I will never buy American vehicles. They are nothing compared to Japanese vehicles. Sorry to say that about American cars but it's true.

As a former GM dealer service tech, shop Forman, service advisor and service manager I can tell you that a serpentine belt at 5000 miles is covered under warranty. The owner should call Chevrolet customer service and get his money back. The 1st point that warranty starts to not cover things is 6 months/7500 miles- that is for alignment, tire balance, key fob batteries and wiper blades. I just had a serpentine belt replaced on my 2023 Silverado diesel at 27,000 miles for noise. Coincidentally this was in Florida.

As far as that mechanic saying he has never not one time seen a serpentine belt fail at less than 75 or 100k miles.... That's just pure nonsense. While it's true that serpentine belts don't "usually" fail early in a vehicles life, there are many reasons why they can and do. If this mechanic has never had to replace a serpentine belt on a newer car I suspect he is a very new mechanic. As for the rest of the trouble on this Silverado, it's inexcusable.

Had a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 at4 5.3L

In December 2024 I had my 2nd issue with my truck having just 60k kms...that issue I was told was due to a faulty TCM. Truck sat at local dealer for 40 days while they had my in a compact Toyota cuv with all season tires on it

Dealer gave me heads up that GM been having major faults with their tcm that come from mexico made parts and the quality was not up to par. And they added they didn't know how long I would have to wait for a tcm to repair...could be a month could be 6 months.

Wasn't pleased, asked the dealer and GM both to buy back truck and let me walk away from GM. I wanted to shift over to Toyota and try a Tacoma which was only truck in my price range. They wouldn't and said only thing we'll do is put you in another gm.

They wanted 24k more for a 2024 Sierra At4 then I paid in 2021....which was absurd and they would give any deal....not only that they simply paid off my truck what was owing which now with a so called 24k increase in the trucks price there was no way that is all they could give me any truck.

Ended up going into a 2024 GMC Canyon at4 which so far is okay but I don't have a good vibe from reading all the bad reviews.

Gm needs to get away from the bad quality parts, and service is sub par from GM to all its customers.

My first issue I had with the truck was rotors...at 11 months old I was getting a vibration. They blamed it on lack of use and I hadn't kept maintenance up on the rotors and my expense to replace.

To tell you the truth I think they should have degraded the price of all their trucks by 24k not increase. The quality is not there and consumers are getting robbed by GM. There is nothing to protect consumers on this and GM gets away with so much.

I hope my truck lasts till I pay it off at the end of 5 yrs then I will sell and buy a Tacoma with a 6 speed manual.

I had a 2019 Sierra (same platform as the 2024 Silverado, it uses the GM "T1" platform, and I also experienced a TCM failure on the truck at 50,000km (about 35k miles). It failed after I parked the truck in a parkade, and I had to push my truck all the way outside of the parkade for the tow truck to be able to load it up. That was a pain! Trucks with under 100,000k should not be experiencing TCM failures.

GM then refused to give me a free loaner vehicle because they "had to figure out if the TCM would be covered under warranty". A week later when the truck is fixed, obviously it was covered under warranty, but they never did give me a free loaner. All this happened in the middle.of a snowstorm too.

I now drive a slightly older Ram, a 2017, and it has been flawless during the time I've had it.

To be fair to GM though,.my dad has a 2024 Silverado with the 3.0 diesel and he absolutely loves it. The 3.0 diesel.is a great motor with the 10 speed. It is a really nice truck.

The TCM failure I experienced was with the 8 speed (5.3L and 8 speed was a common combo in 2019 and the 10 speed was only available on the top trims). it would be nice to know if these failures mentioned in the article occurred on the 8 or 10 speeds, I think GM still offers the 8 speed on their base model trucks don't they? Or have they fully dropped it now for the 10 speed?
