General Motors is recalling 90,081 vehicles because of a problem with ten-speed transmissions. The vehicles are primarily 2020-2022 models. Most of the vehicles being recalled are 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaros but three Cadillac models are being called back as well.
Vehicles Affected by the GM Recall
- 50,147 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaros
- 27,097 2020-2021 Cadillac CT5s
- 10,602 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6s
- 2235 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4s
What is Causing the Problem
According to paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “A transmission control valve in some of these vehicles may be susceptible to excess wear over time, resulting in a gradual loss of pressure within the valve that can cause harsh shifting. In rare cases, the wheels may experience a momentary lock up.” Any lock up of the wheels, no matter how brief, could cause an accident.
According to the Safety Recall Report, drivers may notice that the transmission is shifting harshly before the wheels could lock up.
How GM Found Out About the Problem
According to NHTSA, GM started an internal investigation after a driver of a 2021 Cadillac CT5 reported that both front tires locked up while driving. Following the lock-up, the vehicle went into “neutral.” Due to damage, the vehicle was towed and the damaged engine and front differential were replaced.
GM’s investigator identified 115 field reports alleging a lock-up potentially related to this condition, including one alleged accident. The report does not say if there were any injuries.
How GM Will Fix the Problem
GM informed NHTSA that service technicians will update software in the vehicles that will warn drivers of a potential problem. The software will also downshift the vehicles to stop the lock up from happening.
“Dealers will install new transmission control module software that will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock up condition could occur. Once detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear, preventing the possibility of a wheel lock up condition, which occurs in a downshift from eighth gear. A service engine light and reduced propulsion message will also display in the instrument panel.”
GM will start notifying owners about the recall April 21st, 2025. The NHTSA number for the recall is 25V-148. GM’s number for the recall is N242480630.
