What are the best SUVs for commuting? Now the 2020 Subaru Outback and Forester rank number two and three best for commuters.
The 2020 Subaru Forester and Outback are praised for their off-pavement abilities and getting far away from civilization, but how are the SUVs for commuting? In a recent study, iSeeCars identified the seven best SUVs for daily commutes by looking at four criteria: reliability, comfort, fuel efficiency, and safety. The 2020 Subaru Outback and Forester scored number two and three best for commuters.
Both the Subaru Outback and Forester are fresh off redesigns, and previous generations have been on the longest-lasting cars list. Both models get five stars for safety from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration; they have a minimum of 42 inches of driver legroom and average more than 26 combined city/highway mpg.
The iSeeCars study says even though Outback can travel over a high mountain pass, it’s rated high for its car-like ride, excellent fuel economy, and perfect safety and crash scores.
The 2020 Subaru Forester is ranked number three for its excellent fuel economy, perfect safety scores, and the top three in longevity. The compact SUV also gets high marks for its excellent outward visibility and is ranked the best of any small SUV.
What is the price of the 2020 Subaru Outback?
A 2020 Subaru Outback has an average new car price of $35,447, and a three-year-old used average price of $23,090. The Outback gets 26.2 combined city/highway mpg.
What is the price of the 2020 Subaru Forester?
A 2020 Subaru Forester has an average new car price of $31,507, and a three-year-old used average price of $21,181. The Forester gets 26.4 combined city/highway mpg.
The number one best commuter SUV on the iSeeCars list is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, but you’ll pay an average price of $45,704 to drive one off the dealer lot. The hybrid models get an average of 28 combined mpg.
The Subaru Outback and Forester have intangibles the study does not factor in that makes the two models good commuter vehicles. Subaru uses the Boxer engine, which sits low in the chassis giving the two cars a lower center of gravity.
The unique engine design translates to improved driving dynamics on city streets where cornering, sudden stops, and quick lane changes can occur. Even though the vehicles have a higher ride height, they aren’t top heavy like other SUVs. A driver can make a mistake in either model and not get hurt because of the car’s balance and superior stability.
iSeeCars also ranked the Subaru Impreza as one of the top 10 commuter cars for 2020. The Impreza hatchback scored number nine, and the sedan was number ten on the list.
The 2020 Subaru Forester, Outback, and Impreza also come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive for commuting in all types of weather.

I like the eye sight tech in
I like the eye sight tech in the newer series but they're also heavier and taller than my old sg. Plus there is no manual or dual range box available. I think I'll just keep the old one going until EVs get worthwhile.

I wish I had known that Subaru windshields were prone to cracking before we bought ours. What's going on with that class action lawsuit?
