Sources in Japan say the 2022 Subaru Levorg will get a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. Will the 2022 Subaru WRX get a hatchback body style?
The all-new next-generation Subaru WRX is set to make its global reveal and rumors of a new WRX hatchback body style have surfaced. BestCarWeb in Japan say the 2022 Subaru Levorg STI Sport trim will be powered by an FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine.
This is leading to speculation that the next generation 2022 WRX making its global debut next month will get a hatchback body style like the Levorg pictured below. But we doubt Subaru Corporation will make the leap to bring back the WRX and WRX STI hatchback. We are speculating like others, the all-new 2022 WRX will be powered by the FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged engine.
Why won’t Subaru bring back the hatchback WRX and STI?
Subaru Corporation is in the mode of trying to keep their head above water with the current global microchip shortage hurting production and new vehicle inventory. Subaru is already behind in its 2022 Forester Wilderness and 2022 Crosstrek model launch.
The Japanese automaker is also in the process of launching its first-ever all-electric Solterra compact SUV. Subaru Corporation has limited resources and they aren’t able to launch another all-new WRX hatchback model. The next-generation 2023 Subaru WRX STI is still a year away, and another reason why Subaru won’t bring a hatchback WRX or STI anytime soon.
Sales on the outgoing generation 2021 WRX and 2021 STI have been stellar before the launch of the next-generation models. Subaru doesn’t need to bring back a WRX or STI hatch with sales exceeding expectations.
When will the 2022 Subaru WRX be available for sale?
Subaru of America will announce the next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX in 16 days, and the sport-tuned sedan may not be available for sale until winter or early next year. Performance enthusiasts have waited a long time for the new WRX, and its debut is on September 10, 2021.
When the 2022 Subaru WRX is revealed on September 10, look for the sport-tuned sports car to come in a sedan body style only. It will get many performance upgrades over the outgoing model and a new direct-injection 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine producing around 286 horsepower. Stay tuned.

I really hope the boosted
I really hope the boosted FA24 in the new WRX uses the D4S fuel system found on the BRZ\86. It makes aftermarket parts and tuning sooo good. A BRZ for example can run pure E85 with absolutely no modifications other than a computer tune. On a current WRX that involves replacing much of the fuel system because it is not compatible. Those toyota guys know what they are doing.
