The new 2023 Solterra EV just had its best month ever for Subaru of America. The Solterra started slow but is gaining momentum. Check out what’s next for the EV.
When Subaru launched the all-new 2023 Solterra electric compact SUV, they didn't know what to expect. The Solterra has eight months of sales history, and Subaru says more new EVs are coming.
In July, Solterra had its best sales month so far. The all-new 2023 Subaru Solterra EV, in its eighth full month of sales, had 758 compact electric SUV sales in July. SOA has delivered 3,730 Solterra all-electric models to customers in the first seven months of 2023.
The new Solterra isn't setting any records for EV sales compared with the competition. But this was the Japanese automaker's first stab at an electric vehicle, and they relied heavily on Toyota. The new Solterra is Subaru's most expensive model in the all-wheel-drive lineup, and it's not for everyone.

In contrast, the Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV has ten times the sales in 2023 (37,422 models sold) as the Solterra. Most Subaru customers are looking for value, not a luxury SUV. The Ascent Base trim is priced at $35,120. The lowest-priced Solterra Premium trim starts at $46,616, and the upper Touring trim tops out at $54,110, including dealer fees and destination.
But new Subaru EVs are coming that will be value priced. Subaru Corporation announced last week at its quarterly meeting that eight new EVs are coming by 2028
New Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki announced the new ramped-up EV plan and that more electric models are coming to U.S. customers. The Japanese automaker wants to get half its global volume, an estimated 600,000 units, from full-electric models in 2030.

Osaki said the shift in demand for EVs has been faster than Subaru expected, especially over the last year. He noted that Subaru customers in the U.S. are environmentally conscious and increasingly receptive to EVs. A sizable number of Subaru drivers also own Teslas, the Subaru CEO said in the report.
Torque News reported last week that a new Subaru electric 3-Row SUV will soon be produced in the U.S.

A recent report from Automotive News (by subscription) says Toyota will build a new three-row electric crossover in 2025 in Kentucky for Subaru shortly after it starts making its version, which is tentatively called the bZ5X, said people with knowledge of the plans.
The new EV will not be an electric version of the Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV now being sold to its U.S. customers. It's an all-new model. The report says the name and other details of Subaru's 3-Row electric SUV have yet to be announced, though the Japanese automaker said in May that it planned four battery-powered SUVs in its lineup by 2026.
The new 2023 Solterra EV just had its best month ever for Subaru of America, and more Subaru electric models are coming. Stay tuned.
