Tesla is in the process of massively expanding vehicle production. And of these expansion projects, the latest one is Tesla's new factory in Mexico. Giga Mexico is expected to produce vehicles built on Tesla's next-generation, much more efficient, Gen-3 platform. And today, Elon Musk has confirmed that Giga Mexico will use less water per vehicle than any other car factory in the world.
In the past few years, Tesla has been growing vehicle production at a breakneck speed. For example, in 2022 Tesla was able to produce 1.38 million vehicles. This is a 47% growth from 2021 when Tesla delivered 936,000 vehicles.
Tesla’s 2022 achievement is on its own impressive however, things start to look even more incredible if we go a little further back and compare Tesla’s 2022 production with that of 2018.
For all of 2018, Tesla was able to produce 245,000 cars, and when we compare that to 2022 1.38 million vehicle production, then that means Tesla has managed to grow vehicle production by 6 folds in only the past 4 years.
And even more impressively, Tesla was able to achieve this growth in the midst of a global parts shortage and global pandemic that has forced some legacy automakers to cut production by as much as 50%.

This is all well and good, however, Tesla is just getting started. Per the company’s official statement, Tesla plans to grow vehicle production annually by 50% until it reaches a production rate of 20 million vehicles a year by 2030.
To achieve this goal, Tesla is currently ramping up vehicle production at 2 new factories on two continents. In addition, Tesla is increasing production capacity at 2 of its existing plants in Shanghai and Fremont, California and the EV maker is also building a new factory adjacent to Giga Nevada and latest of these expansion plans is a new factory Tesla is building in Mexico.
On March first, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will build a new Gigafactory in Mexico, located in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León. The announcement was made at Tesla’s Investor Day held in Austin, Texas, and came just a day after Mexican President López Obrador announced the company's plan.
The new Gigafactory in Mexico will produce a yet-to-be-unveiled series of vehicles built on the company’s next-generation “Gen-3” vehicle platform. The Gen-3 platform, which was also announced at Investor Day, is designed to be more affordable and accessible than previous models, with a focus on simplicity, cost reduction, accessibility, efficiency, and reducing the company's environmental impact.
According to Tesla’s Investor Day presentation, the Gen-3 platform contains several breakthroughs when added together are expected to cut the cost of Tesla’s next-generation vehicles by as much as 50%.
The increased efficiency in building Tesla’s next-generation vehicles is also important as Mexico has been facing a severe water shortage in recent years, with many regions experiencing droughts and water scarcity.
In addition to all the new efficiencies of the Gen-3 platform which are expected to drastically cut the water consumption of Giga Mexico, Tesla is also planning to use recycled water at Tesla's new factory in an attempt to address the issue.
And today, with these two factors added together, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has confirmed that Tesla’s new factory in Mexico will be an extremely efficient car plant using less water per vehicle than any automotive factory in the world.
Musk made this comment in response to a Tesmanian article titled “Tesla Giga Mexico May Consume the Least Water of Any Car Factory in the World.” in response, Musk simply wrote saying “it’ll per vehicle.”
This is certainly exciting and increases our already high expectations for Tesla’s Mexico plant and Gen-3 vehicles. Currently, Giga Mexico is still in the permitting stage however, we’ll be sure to keep you posted as Tesla officially begins constructing the plant.
